Janet was an accomplished faculty leader at Penn State. We worked together in the 1990s on issues of diversity and women at the University. She played a key role in Faculty Senate and provided very helpful advice and support to me personally and to the Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity. I am grateful to Janet for her friendship. We will miss her.

Condolences to Janet's family and friends. There is no better tribute to the life of an individual than the lasting memories envisioned as her/his name is recalled. Janet is missed by those she knew and those she touched but didn't know. Rest in peace.

Another loss to our PSU old time group. Janet was an important foundational corner stone to so many of us. She was warm, interested in YOU, and never forgot to help when she could in your development. We are blessed to have had you for so long!

Jan and Ellen were great friends. So enjoyed seeing Jan power walking at 6am near Beaver Stadium on my way to work at Mount Nittany Hospital. Jan was a dedicated Volunteer in our Emergency Department for years. It was a joy to visit and enjoy their always present PSU football tailgate. Janet and Ellen will now RIP together! God Bless! Coach Mike Morse posted a condolence

I am saddened to read of the passing of Janet Atwood,a valued colleague at Penn State. She served many roles in my time at Penn State. She was a caring supervisor, a fellow teacher, a teaching mentor, and a welcome smile on occasions I found myself in at Mt. Nittany Hospital. She practiced what she preached and was a daily example of fitness of mind, body and spirit. I will never forget the time she and “EP” took to see me in my summer job in Maine. She will always be a part of my memories of my career at Penn State. Her contributions in our community were countless and she will be missed.

On behalf of the Department of Kinesiology, College of Health and Human Development, I extend our most sincere condolences to Jan Atwood's family and friends. Our department is a better place because of Jan, both in the past and more recently, thanks to Jan's generosity. We appreciate her longstanding dedication to the success of our faculty, staff, and students and we will continue to honor her legacy in the department and in the college. All of us who knew Jan Atwood benefited from our interactions with her. She was sharp, insightful, and always a wealth of information regarding the history of the department and the evolution of field of physical education. Jan provided a unique and valuable perspective that was highly valued. She is definitely one of the giants on whose shoulders we stand. We will miss her very much.
