I worked for Dr. Fitzgerald in 1968 while I was a student at Penn State. My “job” was to be at his home when Chris finished school and to prepare a dinner that we all ate together. It was only a couple days a week, but it was very special for all 3 of us. In 1971 they both attended my wedding. I visited him once a few years ago. I wasn’t sure he remembered me. Chris was an adult then and was not there. I also took Dr. Fitzgerald’s English 455 class and am forever grateful he introduced me to Jane Austen. I have often thought of him and Chris (who unexpectedly reached out to me many years ago by chance and told me how important those dinners were to him and his father.
Just today, I was doing some research for a 1970 Penn State discussion in June and looked up Dr. Fitzgerald’s name. I was incredibly sad to see that he just recently passed. I stopped by his house in August 2019 to show my twin grandsons where I worked and what I did there. Regretfully, I decided not to knock on the door. My grandsons are good chess players, too, and it would have been an honor to introduce them. Sincere condolences to Chris and his family.

Bob was a lifelong friend to myself and my wife, Lonnie. We stayed in touch with Fitz after we left Penn State, and we always missed seeing him from day-to-day as we often did in State College. Witty, humane, and kind, he was a good part of our lives. -John and Lonnie Balaban

Dr. Robert Lima, OIC, IOHCV posted a condolence

Although I was not a member of his department at PSU, these two Roberts were friends over many years. I will miss running into him on campus, at a bookstore, or other venue. He always had a warm greeting for me and I for him. And we shared a love of English and Irish literature (I was an English major in college), W.B. Yeats being one of my favorite poets as well and thought of Robert when I visited his grave in Ireland years ago. Many touchstones indeed.
My condolences to his offspring and theirs on the loss of a fine human being. R.I.P.

Fitz and family,
Though I am deeply saddened I am also struck by the incredible legacy of the Fitzgerald family. The smile on Roberts face fairly “jumps” off the page as did the spirit of love I always felt when with ANY member of the Fitzgerald family. Surely at this time of loss I hope you are comforted by that spirit which permeated our own “Happy Valley”
Love,
Mike “Merc” Morse
