Obituary of David Lester Patterson

David Lester Patterson, 71, of Boalsburg, PA and formerly of Wall Township, NJ, died on January 9, 2021 at Mount Nittany Medical Center with his wife and son by his side. David was born on February 13, 1949, in Neptune, NJ. He was the son of William R. Patterson, Sr. and Jean C. Nutt Patterson of Asbury Park and Spring Lake Heights, NJ. He married Martha Kusha on August 5, 1972, who survives him at home. He is survived by one son, D. Matthew Patterson and daughter-in-law Kristie R. Graham Patterson of State College, PA; two grandchildren, whom he adored, of State College. David is also survived by his siblings, William R. Patterson, Jr. and his wife Lucie Maggio of East Stroudsburg, PA; and Gerald A. Patterson and his wife Gail Totten of Charlotte, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew James Patterson. David was a graduate of Manasquan HS, Manasquan, NJ where he played center on a State Championship football team and was also a graduate of Rutgers University with a BS and MS in Ceramic Science and Engineering. He retired in 2008 from the David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton where he worked as a research scientist for 36yrs and has two US patents for furnace design. He was an active member and officer in the Wall Township Lion's Club during the 1980s and 1990s. Dave loved to golf in his early years and then took up shooting when he moved to Boalsburg. He became passionate about it with the help of his son and good friends. Dave loved fishing and boating and was a lifelong card player, puzzle builder and Sudoku solver. He will be remembered for his smile that he freely shared with everyone, his wit and jovial personality. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who left this life too soon for those who loved him. It was David's wish for immediate cremation and because of Covid 19 the family has chosen to have a celebration of life in the future in lieu of a viewing and funeral at this time. Notification will be made when large gatherings are once again permitted. The family asks that any memorial donations be made to The Pink Zone of State College, for Breast Cancer Research.
