We just heard the news of Dick’s passing.
The Lundy and Leibowitz families shared a unique bond that started at Wisconsin and continued at Penn State.
We have fond memories of our times together. Dick was an inspiration in everything he did, from sports to academics.
We are so sorry and send our deepest condolences.

As has been noted was true for others, Dick was always supportive when I was junior faculty fresh out of graduate school and then throughout our 20 years together on the Psychology Department faculty. His was a calm voice of reason in departmental meetings and committees that was always respected by other faculty. One of the best colleagues on could hope for. Everyone was better for knowing him.

Gary and I met Dick and Lenny at the Penn State Tennis Club during the 1970s. Dick was a true gentleman ~ always a heartfelt greeting and a smile on his face. We ran into them in Vail, CO many years ago, and had a nice visit. We followed Todd's tennis career and know that Todd settled in Denver. Dick had a long, eventful life and for that, I know all of you are grateful.
Our condolences to you, Lenny, the boys, and their families.

I'm afraid I can actually add very little to what has already been said about Dick. Dr. Lundy was my first mentor in the Penn State psychology department. He was also the director of my masters thesis. Perhaps more importantly, he was my first mentor and supervisor in the task of beginning to become a therapist. His quiet steadiness and kindness, and the gentle respect he showed his clients was my first introduction to what is expected and in fact required of a therapist. In an early class he asked us all what was our "theory" of therapy. After we offered up our ideas he stated that he believed that the task of a therapist was to quite unabashedly "love" his clients; an attitude which was communicated clearly to them only through his attentiveness and acceptance. He said that he thought clients came to therapy with two conflicting beliefs about themselves. The predominant belief being that they were fundamentally unlovable; though they also held a smaller hope that this was in error. He said that if the therapist could maintain this accepting and attentive relationship until the client has at last revealed what they thought was worst about themselves, then therapy was over. At that point the therapist had left the client with a conundrum only the client could resolve; whether the therapist had been mistaken about caring for them or alternatively that they were in fact worthy of the caring and acceptance of others, and of themselves, after all. In many additional years of training and independent work as a therapist I have never heard our task and our purpose better expressed. Thank you Dick.

Dave and Families,
The Lundy boys sure got athletic skills from your dad. I’ll never forget (and still have) the photo of you and me with Bill Jeffries from Biddy Soccer ....I’m sure your dad was proud of your prowess on the Tennis Courts and soccer fields as well as the hardwood.
I’m very sorry for your loss but glad you had the treasure of time. My sincerest condolences. I’m sure his legacy lives on in each of your families.

So sorry to hear this news. Dick was a kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. I loved sitting with him at faculty meetings as he regularly shared wisdom and wit. His passion for psychology, training our students, tennis, and skiing were always on display. We need more like Dick in this world.
