My Dad, William Harkness, tried hard to be a good dad despite growing up with a father who was very poor role model. He wasn't a drunk the way his dad was. He certainly never threatened us kids with a gun the way his dad did to him and his brothers. Dad treated us every Sunday morning to donuts for breakfast and paid for the dentist to fill our cavities. He hosted backyard barbeque parties for my brother's Little League team. He spent hours fixing fencing so that my sister and I could keep horses to ride at the house we lived at in our teens. On the other hand, he was punctuality challenged. I remember one winter day in college when I had an 8 am exam and Dad insisted on driving me in. I arrived at 8:45 and had to complete the midterm exam in 30 minutes. Not a perfect dad but he loved us and tried hard to be a good one.
