Obituary of Morton Kimmel
Morton Kimmel, 97, of State College, died peacefully and surrounded by some loved ones, on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at the Village At Penn State Atrium.
Born May 11, 1923, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Morris and Ruth Rubin Kimmel. On November 27, 1949 he married Edith Musnitsky, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Ronnie Voigt of State College, Barry Kimmel and his wife Michele of Conway, SC, and Jody Kimmel of Mt. Tremper, NY; one sister, Gladys Moslin of Great Neck, NY; three grandchildren, Rebecca Deery and her husband Mark, Ginny Lee and her husband Andrew, and Leellen Kimmel; and five great-grandchildren, Rachel, Gabriella, Alexandra, Orion and River.
Morton was honorably discharged from the United States Army Air Corps after serving from 1943 until 1945. He served during World War II in the 8th Air Force's 94th Bomb Group. At 20 years old, Morton joined the war effort, leaving his native Philadelphia to join the Army Air Corps. Trained as a bombardier, Morton survived 36 missions over Axis territory. In recognition to his service to our country, he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four battle stars, an Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, a Presidential Unit Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster and a Distinguished flying Cross. In 2016, over 70 years after the war, France presented Morton with the Chevalier of Legion of Honour, the highest French order of merit, both military and civil.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
