I just learned of Della's passing and wanted to offer my condolences to the family. As my first job after graduating from PSU, I worked in Rustum's office (early 2000s) but also helped with Cement and Concrete Research. They were both remarkable people and left quite an impression in my life, even though I worked there for only a few years. I still think of them often, and fondly.

I am blessed to have known both Della and Rustum Roy in this life journey, and am especially grateful to Della for her kindnesses to me during one of the most stressful and challenging periods of my life. She was the quiet shadow to Rustum while he was alive, but I was so glad to see her come into her own after his passing. A truly remarkable and highly accomplished woman, no doubt Rustum could not have achieved all he did without her untiring dedication to their life and its many demands. There is so much more to say ... so sad that we cannot celebrate her life as we did Rustum's. The times have changed. She has been liberated from a body that no longer served her, and I celebrate her freedom into the Beyond. My condolences to the family - I do miss the Roy family and their influence in my life - in both PA and AZ, but am especially grateful for the times we had together.
Rest in peace, Della. Much love to you & your family.

Della and Rustum were giants in Materials Science and Engineering and I am honoured to have known and interacted with both of them. They will continue as great tributes to our profession and to Penn State. In particular, Della paved the way for women in science and engineering and she did that on pure talent and on the forcefulness of her personality..

I worked for Della in the Materials Research Laboratory, Penn State University, in the late 80's and early 90's. She was a soft-spoken and witty woman with tremendous energy and tenacity! She will surely be missed by her Family and her Friends. God bless you all.

Dr. Della Roy was my MS thesis advisor from 1982-1985, She was soft spoken, and motivated students through her work ethic. She would regularly be in the Materials Research Laboratory, till midnight on most days. Between 2005-2008, I would pick her up from Foxdale and bring her home for an Indian dinner, which she always enjoyed and missed. Our last meeting was at Foxdale, where she had come to watch us give a ballroom dancing demo for the residents. Our condolences to the family.
