Dr. Buss recruited me to join the doctorate program in genetics in 1970 at Penn State under the National Defense and Education Act. I will always be grateful to him for his kind encouragement during my graduate studies. He inspired me to do my best in my research. He was a wonderful mentor. I so much enjoyed talking with him about his experiences during his graduate student socials. So kind and willing to offer valuable advice. Whenever I taught genetics at Stephens College I would always think of him. He was a great man. James D. Hoerter, PH.D graduate of his interdepartmental program in genetics ( 1974).

We will miss Ed's smiling face and fascination with life at each and every event he attended. I met Ed at local Democratic events, but later at our Constitution Day celebrations and at local veterans events. He listened to people, asked questions, and made us all feel inspired. He will be greatly missed. Thank you, Ed and the Buss family.

Over the past several years we have had the privilege of getting to know Ed through our mother/mother-in-law, Shirley Dunn. We always enjoyed talking with him about his life which was filled with so many accomplishments, along with his enduring knowledge and insight on so many topics. He was so kind hearted and we appreciate all that he did for Shirley. He was a truly special man who touched so many people’s lives.

I was in his undergrad biology/genetics course in 1979. I loved it. He was tough but fair and clearly enjoyed teaching. I sheepishly went and asked him to do a research project for the upcoming summer. I fell in love with research! He also encouraged me to do my masters degree at Penn State. What a wonderful and brilliant man! God bless his soul and sympathy to his family.

The Last Student
We met Dr. Buss, as he is affectionately known in our family, at a concert of the Penn State Symphony Orchestra in which our daughter, Katie, was performing. We met again and sat together at her next concert and soon after we “adopted him” and were taking him out for pizza (which he hadn’t had in years) as well as luncheons at his favorite, local restaurants. As we drove through town on the way to one destination or another, he would point out his old neighborhood and reminisce aloud. When the weather was inclement, we made dinner in his apartment. And, of course, he was always up to attend a concert – where he was a campus celebrity. As Katie neared the completion of her Master of Music degree, she began applying for doctorate programs. One evening, over a pizza and wine dinner at his apartment, Dr. Buss coached her on the interview process. His eyes sparkled with excitement the whole time. It was clear that he was once again, in his element. After these coaching sessions, Katie was accepted into the program of her choice is now in her last year of studies for her Doctorate of Musical Arts. We had a special celebratory dinner and it was hard to tell who was more proud; Katie to announce her acceptance or Dr. Buss for the success of another of his students.
I last saw Dr. Buss to celebrate his 98th birthday. We sat at the dinner table in his apartment and shared a steak dinner, a bottle of wine and his special request, coconut cream pie. I gave him an update on Katie’s progress with her studies. Most important, I noted how remarkable it was that at 98 years old, he was still having a huge impact on students. As a family, we are honored to be part of such a remarkable legacy. We are grateful to have known him.

Ellen & Norman, What a beautifully written obituary. Your Mom and Dad lived a life full of community, family and country. I'm sure you have many wonderful memories of your lives together. The last time we saw your folks was approximately 20 years ago, They were in Lafayette for a reunion and we met them for a wonderful evening. Your Mom reminded me of Aunt Ollie in her mannerisms and her chuckles. And your Dad was a treasure trove of memories. We really enjoyed his stories of World War II and especially his reminiscing of the "Band Of Brothers" of which he was a member. He told us of his invitation to the dedication of the World War II Memorial. I have fond memories of you when you were visiting at Aunt Ollies' during the summers. How I loved to play in her summer kitchen. She and I played many duets on her and Uncle Ed's pianos. Ellen, we spend our winters in Ft. Myers where we have a condo. We have visited Naples beaches and taken a couple of the tours offered there. Norman, we have friends near Bar Harbor, and they have taken us to several places that the typical tourist doesn't get to see. You live in a beautiful part of the country.

Dr. Buss was an exceptional educator and researcher. He was inspirational to me as an undergraduate student in his genetics course. Despite being but one of several hundred students in the Forum, he recognized my special interest in genetics. I had the privilege of being invited with my fiancé to an end-of-semester party at his home. It was a very special experience for me as an undergraduate to be able to socialize with graduate students and faculty. And of course, his wife Dorothy served wonderful hors d'oeuvres. As fate would have it, our paths many more times during my graduate studies and post-graduate career at Penn State. He will be missed.

I first met Ed and Dorothy here at Penn State, shortly after I joined the faculty in 1995. I took an instant liking to both of them. They were a wonderfully polite, intelligent, courteous, and generous couple. Ed’s approach to academia was old school in the best sense of that term. Ed was a consummate scientist, a trait that ranks high in my estimation of colleagues and friends. We had many occasions to talk, sometimes at length, and I will miss those conversations very much as I work through the remainder of my own lifetime.
