We were so fortunate to have Ed as our neighbor for the last 7 years, and we will all miss him. He took the time right off the bat to learn all Barb and mine kid's names (Amanda, Nicholas and Sarah), and even our dog Nimaa's who he tolerated when she would run over and jump up on him, and he'd frequently ask how they were doing. He and I spent many an afternoon out back, many times at the garden, talking sports. Ed loved his baseball, and loved to talk about the "good ol' days" of being a Pirates fan growing up. And if I remember correctly he saw Babe Ruth's last home run. And of course we spent most of that time talking about Penn State football-if it was offseason we'd talk recruits (which I was surprised how well he kept up on) or just share old memories, and in season he'd always ask my thoughts on the previous game, certain players and coaching decisions. And Ed ALWAYS had a few opinions of his own!
Speaking of the garden, Ed first gave me a portion of it, then half and eventually the whole thing. Ed graciously allowed us to take some of the rhubarb that he had planted and make pies (my son Nicholas' favorite). And it seemed every time I was out in the garden putzin' around suddenly he'd be there, and instead of weeding I'd spend the next hour talking sports with Ed-l loved every minute of it!
I'll miss seeing that basement workshop light on, and we'll always treasure the toys he made our grandson Jack. I had to be on my toes talking to Ed with that sharp wit of his, and he was as genuine a person as I"ve ever met-he made an impact on all our lives, The Bernier Family (Kurt, Barb, Amanda, Nicholas and Sarah)
