Savas was a mentor, advisor and a good friend. I had the good fortune of having him as my PhD thesis advisor back in 1984-1988 at Penn State. What I will remember most about Savas apart from his academic brilliance is his jovial and fun loving personality. He not only taught me Fluid Mechanics but also the art of being a good human being. He always carried a smile and a loud greeting on the many occasions that we met at conferences. I fondly remember the occasion when I heard “that” voice out of the blue in the background in a park in Vienna, Austria and immediately knew that it must be Savas. Savas’ spirit and jest for life will always stay with me and I will miss him. My heartfelt condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to Savas' family. I first met Savas through the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) almost 20 years ago. I recall one of my first committee dinners with the heat transfer committee sitting with Savas and his warm and jovial personality was contagious. I would only see him once or twice a year at conferences, but always tried to make time to catch up with him and sit down for a chat over a meal or coffee. I will miss him personally, but also the community will miss him as well. Rest well, my friend.

My condolences to the Yavuzkurt family. I have know Savas since I was a graduate student. He was such a great person to talk to and was always positive. I never remember him not smiling or being jolly. I will truly miss seeing him at the Turbo Expo in the future when we have an in person conference.
