I was an adult student during Steven Herb’s Chair residency at Dominican University. I fondly remember the intensive one week class/8 hours each day. He really helped us understand children literacy and exuded his love of children, reading and teaching. Even though my life’s path has not included the Library, I am honored to have been taught by Steven Herb. My condolences to your family, as I know he must be missed.

I have been Steve’s friend for 47 years. We were special education students together at Penn State. He married my mentor, Sara, which was such a great match! I later married Paul, and we all got along so well, spending many days together in State College and Chautauqua. When Steve worked at Dauphin County Library, he “lived” at our house (stayed a few days each week) because it was closer to his job. Our kids got to know him, and they adored him. Every time he came, he brought books, records with songs and stories, videos, and even the video machine (not many people had them then) from the library. He would take them back and bring new ones the next time he came. What a joy for all of us. He truly enriched our lives. I always loved children’s books, but his and Sara’s influence made me want to learn more; and that knowledge certainly made me a much better teacher.
Steve and I exchanged many similar stories of our years growing up. We both had brothers named David and Paul, and we both loved them dearly. When my brother Dave died at 42, Steve called to express his sympathy. He asked me to tell him one good story about Dave. I said that my brother, a popular jock in high school, befriended everyone, especially a particular girl who was bullied by many and who told us at the funeral how he respected her and helped her. As I was talking, Steve began to cry; and I knew how much he cared about Dave and me.
Every time we were with Steve and Sara throughout the years, we learned something new - about history, literature, music, etc. Perhaps more important, every time we were with him, we laughed – over and over. We always left feeling good about our friendship and ourselves.
My husband Paul remembers their common love of baseball and how Steve got him into playing Fantasy Baseball in his league. Despite Paul’s inability to take the pressure (quite a joke between them), he enjoyed his interactions with his friend over the game. Paul especially remembers carefree days at Chautauqua with lawn bowling, great performances, and Steve’s amazing lunches with various exotic items. He enjoyed entertaining! When Paul started brewing his own beer, Steve was a big supporter, telling him it was great to have a friend who was a chemist and that his IPA was Steve’s 4th favorite of all time.
As he did with everyone he knew and cared about, Steve made us feel special, and we will miss him terribly.

I remember Steve as a fantastic librarian while working next to him at DCLS. He was innovative and certainly added zest to the children’s department. I remember him at storytelling and how the kids loved him.
Rest well Steve. Carolyn Wiggins Poff

Sara, I was so sorry to see that Steve is gone - too soon. He was such a good person, easy to work with, great storyteller, so intelligent and fun. He will be greatly missed. I know how difficult this is to navigate on so many levels. My husband died suddenly in October, and we slowly coping. When I get back to State College (currently with family on the West Coast), I will contact you. Again, so sorry for your and your family's loss. Barb Van Horn

I first met Steve because he was one of my father’s closest and dearest childhood companions. But over time, he grew to become a true friend to me as well. I was always moved by his gentle warmth and compassion—and I’ll never forget his affable nature. When in his presence, Steve’s kindness was palpable. Several years ago, this resonating kindness affected me profoundly as Steve took interest in my writing/research projects and subsequently took me under his wing, providing me with guidance, mentorship, and a platform at PSU. And he did these things not as a favor to my dad, but because he really believed in me. Steve was always 100% genuine in this way, one of the most genuine people I’ve ever known. I’ll miss him greatly, and I hope that he and his family know how much of a positive impact he had upon my life.

Steve was an amazing educator, innovator, and community advocate. I worked with Steve on the State College Borough Redevelopment Authority as well on several Penn State projects involving the library and books. He was a thoughtful and kind collaborator and generous person. We will miss Steve greatly.

I only had the opportunity to be neighbors with Steven for a short period time and during the pandemic, so really didn't get to know him very well, but every time we passed in the hall, I knew he was going to have something very funny to say, and usually based on something he remembered about me from a prior meeting. My heart goes out the the family. He will be missed.

Cel and I were struck and moved when we read the testimonial of a former young colleague of Steve. What she described was exactly why we loved him so much. She so eloquently put into words who Steve was, how he valued people and sought to nurture and elevate them. She had benefitted from that and so with us and our son, Collin. We all have been beneficiaries of who Steve was by having him in our lives. His light may have been snuffed out too soon, but he has left all of us to carry on his wisdom and love, to pay it forward.
We are so honored to be friends with Steve and Sara, and have long cherished this beautiful couple. They are the best we people can be. Steve will be missed but his inspiration will live on.
