I am very sad to see John leave us. I was a very good friend of John’s way back in Johnson City. I lost track of him after graduation. We spent many days playing together. I was just looking him up on the internet to reach out and found I was too late. I will keep his memory with me til we meet again.

My heart goes out to John‘s family to express my condolences and sympathy. I am so saddened by the news of my dear collegue‘s and friend‘s death.
John and I met first in 1998 when I took over the Hannover-State College Students Exchange Program on the German side. Never having been to the States before John was my chaperone into this new world and I quickly learned to love the country and its people.
I was always impressed by his friendly, optimistic and personal approach to our students and certainly he will be unforgettable to all of them.
John will always be a fundamental part of my memories, associations and feelings for America. I‘m grateful for his and his dear wife‘s hospitality and will miss his wisdom and humanity.

Dear Patty and Kristina, My heartfelt condolences on such a profound loss. John was one of the first and most impressive teachers I had the pleasure of knowing early on in my career. He had such a commanding presence that I always felt I stood a little taller when talking with him. And yet, he was such a kind and caring soul. I have nothing but fond memories of John whose brilliance was complemented by a life fully lived and generously shared. We have all lost a great man but we are all better people for having known him. Dear Mrs. Mutzeck
I am so sorry to learn of your husbands passing.
I did not know him as I took Spanish from Mr. Greendoner in Jr. High. I took your typing class in 9th grade in 1975-76, and it has helped me greatly throughout my life.
I wanted to thank you for your GREAT PATIENCE with me teaching me to type. I just thought I was too stupid to learn, however you were able to teach me to type.
later, in College, I learned that I was Dyslexic.
Your kind yet firm teaching has helped me Greatly all my life.
I will always be Grateful to you for the lifetime gift you have given me.
I'm sure with the Thousands of students you had over the years that you don't remember me, however I wanted you to know the great and positive impact you have made in my life.
Thank You!
Sincerely,
Patrick Mercer

Dear family of Mr.Mutzeck- my sincere condolences,
I got to know him in 1997 and 1998 as a German exchange student from Hannover together with the students of the State College High School in Pennsylvania- he was mainly organizing this exchange and I remember him being very humorous and thoughtful at any time. He also loved both the German and the American culture and he was never short of a story.
He will be remembered for sure through generations of students. I am sending you and your family strenght for the upcoming weeks and month. With kind regards from Germany- Kathrin Geh (Gades)

Sad news to start this year...
I only met John for a couple of weeks in the late '90s being an exchange student from Hannover, Germany. But I had the special pleasure to be his exchange student - he stayed with my family during his visit to Germany in 1997 and I had the chance to stay with him and his wife even twice, in 1997 and 1998.
Being his guest gave me a few freedoms and opportunities during my stay and he left none aside to show me 'the American way', yet still rooted in his German and European history. I made a lot of memories during those couple of weeks, not only from the exchange program, but from the activities that he took me along with - from a camping trip to the Allegheny Reservoir to a misty light aircraft flight from some private airstrip somewhere in Pennsylvania. Memories that are still vivid even a quarter of a century later.
I cannot say to have known him for long as those weeks were over just too soon and we never came back into contact after that time. But I can say that he certainly influenced my life to some extent during those weeks and definitely to the positive. I will always remember him as an important person during that time and I will remember those times for long.
Ruhe in Frieden, Herr Mutzeck und danke für alles!

Herr Mutzeck was my favorite teacher at State High and probably the reason I majored in German at Penn State. He never mentioned his incredibly difficult childhood to us, only once mentioning that coming to America as a teenager aboard a Liberty Ship had been a blast! He took a group of State High students to Austria in 19769, the same year I attended Study Abroad at the University of Cologne, and invited me to come and visit the group during my free time in the summer. I will never forget his kindness and generosity as a teacher and a friend. May he rest in richly-deserved peace.

Mr. Mutzeck was more than a teacher, he was an amazingly adorable man.
I was a student of his during my high school days, and thoroughly enjoyed his class (1995-1998). However, it was my two exchange trips with him to Hannover, Germany that really allowed me to know him. He was so animated and almost magical about describing all we would see and do when we were there; and he was right.
I remember zooming down the Autobahn in a car with Herr Mihm while Herr Mutzeck was in the car next to us with other students, and just the sheer joy on everyone’s faces as they experienced the fast ride.
I will never forget how on the first flight over, sometime in the middle of the night, he stood from his seat and began yodeling! We students were rather shocked initially, and yet it’s one of those things that makes me smile when I think of him.
He just radiated enthusiasm that was contagious.
And then there was the more somber man. When we were in Munich he pulled me aside to tell me a story about his father and a hat shop, and asked me to be the leader the next day when we toured Dachau as he would be unable to go.
He was so much more than a teacher. I have thought fondly of Herr Mutzeck often, he is an unforgettable soul.
I wish much peace and comfort to his family, but somehow I think he’s grinning from above now and yodeling for all of heaven to hear.
Ich werde dich vermissen Herr Mutzeck.
