Dear Beth, I was sorry to hear about Jim's passing. I do love the picture of him for the memorial. Captures his signature look. I hadn't realized his spiritual origins either but, upon reflection, the social gospel very much animated his life's work. Sorry for your loss but feel grateful to have known both you and Jim. - Connie Flanagan

Beth and family, I was so sad to hear of Jim's passing. I have many fond memories of working with him on advancing and supporting the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) program through the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). He was the recipient of NCFR's CFLE Special Recognition Award in 1997. He was a kind, sweet, and thoughtful man who made an important contribution to the practice of Family Life Education. He will be missed.

Dear Beth and Family,
Jon and I hold dear the memories that we have of spending time with you and Jim. We are so saddened to hear of his passing. We feel very blessed to have spent quality time with both of you last July at Way Fruit Farm. We always walked away from a visit feeling happy that our lives crossed paths. I treasure the last conversation that I had with Jim at the rink after Shannon’s skating lesson. We talked for an hour! But the easy of conversation and friendship is what I really embraced with Jim.
I hope that warm memories prop you up at this time.
In Sympathy,
Beth and Jon Eckert

Dear Beth and family,
I was so sorry to read about the loss of Jim. I so enjoyed being part of the same academic department and seeing him almost daily. Not only was he exceptionally talented and focused on community, he was kind and selfless, always willing to share advice and encourage me. I also loved the times that I saw the two of you out and about and am smiling just thinking of those too infrequent times. Please know that my thoughts are with you in what I am sure is a very difficult time.
Warmest regards, Lisa Davis

Beth: I was shocked to learn today of Jim's passing. I have so many happy memories of our times together at meetings and conferences. And I especially recall the lunch that Jim and I shared as he passed through Athens a few years ago. As you certainly know, Jim was a mentor, role model and friend to generations of state Extension specialists. He was a trailblazer in computer-assisted instruction before most of us had computers. We are all better for having known him. I wish you all the best in the days ahead.

The Early Childhood community has lost a treasure. Jim's commitment to young children, teachers and families was extraordinary and I was proud to call him a colleague and friend. He has left a hole in our hearts but a legacy of dedication, knowledge, humor and inspiration for us to follow. Love to Beth and Jim's family.

Dear Beth and Family,
Jim was a friend who could always make us feel special. He had a ready smile, loved good conversation and was a wonderful cook. We enjoyed being with both of you and never tired of the time we spent together. Jim was a true Renaissance Person. He was highly educated, compassionate, considerate, understated, loving and generous. He lived life as Christ calls us to live. We feel blessed that you both were a part of our lives. From our chance meeting at Agway over thirty years ago to reminiscences in the past weeks, we will cherish it all. We will miss him but revel in the memories we have shared. We love you both - Mary and Bob Hershey

As a friend of Amy's, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. While attending Penn State, Amy and family took me in and I have fond memories of partaking in Thanksgiving dinner. You all treated me like I was family and I appreciate the hospitality and friendship. Dr. Van Horn was a great man, who left the world in a better place and I am grateful for his contributions. I hope you all find solace with the wisdom that you will carry from him and the memories shared.

Beth, I cannot say enough thanks for Jim and all the ways he contributed to my professional growth. It is because of the connections and assignments that I got from him that I am where I am today. He provided me with such rich opportunities to host satellite broadcasts, convene community panels on diversity, learn from experts in child development and family studies, lead initiatives, learn technology in distance learning. I needed to learn how to navigate his humor. I was so lucky to have his support and to get reconnected when I returned to Better Kid Care in 2012. The foundation he laid in this organization is strong and his impact on families will continue for many, many years. Well done, good and faithful servant.

To the Van Horn family,
On behalf of the Minshall family (former neighbors on McBath Street), I'm extending our condolences on the loss of Mr. Van Horn. He was always such a nice man who always greeted our parents with a friendly greeting and great respect. I remember seeing him often in the grocery store with his shopping list & clipboard and thought what an organized man he was. You're in our thoughts and prayers. Maggie (Minshall) Meyers

When I think of people who impacted my career and professional world, I think of Jim. He taught me so much about being an educator, a colleague and a collaborator. Most importantly, he taught people how to manage with lots of grace and a good dose of humor. Thank you, Jim, for being you.

I have know Jim Van Horn since I first served mass with him at Immaculate Conception Church in Columbus in 1964. I water skied with him when he had a boat at Lake Erie and Buckeye Lake. He was the best role model and family friend anyone could ask for. He left the world a much better place for having been here. I feel privileged to have known him. My condolences to his entire family and friends. Jim Good
