Robert Lima was a great scholar, teacher and poet. But I will remember him most as a great friend. We were colleagues at Penn State for many years (1988 -- 2000), and we would descend from Burrowes Building where we had our offices to downtown at least twice a week to have lunch. He was a joy to be with, but don't mess with the bacon if he ordered a brunch. It had to be crispy or else! We would sit at the Corner Room, the Waffle House or some other eatery for hours, enjoying great conversation. He and Sally loved to travel and we would discuss our favorite places. Planning trips was a great pastime. He always had a million projects, and was always composing poetic texts or writing scholarly charlas. I really miss those days in State College and I really miss Bob! I envision him sitting on a cloud with an old pen in hand sending us all poetic missives from above.

Prof Lima was a friend, teacher and advisor to me at Penn State in the late 70's-early 80's. Although I often felt brutalized by his multiple choice questions, time spent with him discussing the mystical sides of life, sharing creative writings, and exploring ideas on personal expression made me feel very much at home in his presence. His heart was open to people of all ages, backgrounds and orientations, and his welcoming smile was transcendent. I will especially remember those times when he would happily join me or a group of students tilting beers and/or having lunch at any number of State College's open air cafes. Never to forget... My kindest regards to you Sally, and my condolences to the entire family...

I took two classes with Dr. Lima. He was a very articulate, intelligent, educated, and dedicated professor. Every time I encountered him outside of the University, he would stop and talk with me. His personal warmth and intellectual depth were always at the forefront of those conversations. He obviously loved life, his family, and people. We are all lucky to have known him in whatever capacity that we did, and I feel deeply for your loss. He was a prime example of a life well lived, though, and a model for us all to aspire to.

Bob was an extraordinarily engaged-in-humanity gentleman and a standout of accomplishment. He now counts as another classmate who, as St. Paul said often, has fallen asleep. I plan to see him again down the road.
Our love and deepest sympathy go out to Sally and the family,
Bob (and Kathy) Strayt0n

It was never a handshake when seeing Bob. Rather a huge grin and big hug followed by stories and laughter. A wonderful man who could regale you with tales of his exploits and knowledge of cultures and history yet cared even more about how you were doing. I will always enjoy my memories of our times together. To me, the world is a little less interesting today.

Miles of smiles and fun shared w/Bob + Sally on cruises, trips, reading his poetry that didn't rhyme, knowing he got eggshells in his soft-boiled eggs, his warm smiles, cheerful manner, love of Sally, and the best friend you could ever want!

Memory
As Bob’s “Little Brother “, I treasure the recent moments I had to reminisce with him.
On November 7th, 2021, many family members came together in Bob and Sally’s
State College home, to celebrate his birthday.
I wrote and after dinner, read to him the following poem.
I was humbled when the great poet told me that he enjoyed it and thanked me.
A SONNET FOR MY BROTHER
THE POET - SIR ROBERT LIMA , PH.D.,OIC, IOHCV
ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 86th BIRTHDAY
Some say, “Life is just one thing after another,
Some good, some bad, and some horrific.”
But keep placing one foot in front of the other,
For with enough enlightenment,
Life’s challenges are indeed terrific,
Bearing the possibility of creativity.
Now your journey has you struggling,
As you climb a fearsome mountain,
But with your faithful companion Poets:
Your Keats, your TS Eliot, your Dylan Thomas,
Together tapping into the sacred waters
Of a deep transcendent fountain,
And singing jubilant songs as you ascend
The beckoning summit of immortality.
John Bosco Lima, M.D.
