Elaine and I never met, but we have a rather odd but fun connection. In 1989, as a college freshman, I bought a used car, a 1978 Dodge Aspen, with a very unusual 3-speed stick shift on the floor at what was then Rider Oldsmobile on West College Avenue. On the bumper was a sticker that said "Bear Lovers are the Best." I asked the dealer what the sticker meant, and he told me that the previous owner was Elaine Wickersham, who owned the "Books and Bears" bookstore downtown. Over the two years that I owned the car, I swapped out several stickers, but the "Bear Lovers are the Best" never left the bumper. I just really thought it was cool to support kids' reading.
