Obituary of Doris Eileen Longwill Carter

Doris Eileen Longwill Carter, 91, of State College, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Foxdale Village surrounded by family. She was born November 27, 1931 in Indiana, PA to parents Horace S. Longwill and Louise Miller of South Fork and Clymer respectively. She attended several public schools as the family moved multiple times finally settling in Hershey, PA where she graduated from Hershey High School and Hershey Junior College. She transferred to Penn State and completed a B.A. degree in Commerce in 1954.

Following college, she became a buyer for the Hershey Department Store, enjoying buying trips to New York City. In 1956, Doris married Glenn Carter of Washington, PA who survives after 66 years of marriage. She became a mother to three children and transitioned to a new career as homemaker. As her children grew, she started working in various secretarial roles at both Penn State and West Virginia University, retiring in 1993.

Doris was known by many as "Dorie" and to some as "Cookie Cupcake", one of a group of clowns who entertained at the local hospital and charitable events. She loved line dancing as a member of the Silver Spurs Line Dancers who performed for many retirement and nursing homes as well as local festivals. She, along with her husband Glenn, enjoyed many years as members of the Centre Squares square dance club.

She served her community well as a volunteer in many capacities. As a long-time member of the State College Presbyterian Church, she served as both an elder and a deacon and was involved in women's groups. For 33 years she was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), which helps support women's scholarships. She was especially active at Foxdale Village, her place of residence for the past 13 years, by serving on many committees including the garage sale, food, and transportation committees. She loved welcoming new residents to her neighborhood and was a friend to all.

Doris was an avid fan of Penn State Women's Volleyball and Basketball, attending many games over the years. She was known for her creativity, crafting, and organizational skills as well as her willingness to help others. But most of all she will be remembered for her kindness and her bright smile. Doris loved to travel, spending numerous winters in Green Valley, Arizona and summers going to the beach. She loved to try new things, was always on the go, and was always ready for a celebration or social gathering. But her greatest loves were her family, friends, church, and beloved Foxdale Village community.

She was an amazing and selfless Mom to 3 children, Grandma to 8 grandchildren and Nana to 9 great-grandchildren. She was the heart of the family, all of whom loved her just as much in return. She was incredibly special and we are all better off for having her in our lives.

Doris will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her husband Glenn; her children, Neil Carter and his wife, Cindy, of Ridgway, Lois Rothgeb and her husband, Mark, of State College, Colleen Smith and her husband, Perry, of Winston-Salem, NC; her grandchildren, Christy Gibbons and husband Vince, Erin Tison and husband Keith, Suzanna D'Souza and husband Ryan, Noelle Toumayants and husband Ashod, Michael Rothgeb, Jonathan Rothgeb and wife Megan, Katie Smith, and Emily Smith; and her precious great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Longwill, on April 14, 2018.

A private graveside service was held at Centre County Memorial Park with the Reverend John Porter.

Memorial service will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, February 18, 2023 in the Auditorium at Foxdale Village, 500 E Marylyn Ave, State College.   Refreshments to follow the service.  All are welcome to attend.
