Doug and I were so saddened to hear of Ernie’s passing. When we moved into Gatesburg, Ernie stopped by with popsicles for all of our children.

I met Ernie in the fall of 1976. I was looking for a place to shoot smallbore rifle and he was a member of the local team. When he learned that I was an Army veteran he convinced me to join the 318th LEM Company and to try out for the 79th ARCOM Service Rifle Team. He put me on the road that led to a 26 year career. He also deserves credit for his leadership with the 4H marksmanship program. He made it possible for youngsters in the community to develop their skills and become outstanding marksmen - including State and National Champions, National Record Holders, and one Olympian. Thanks, Ernie, for all you gave us. Rest in peace.

I served with CW 4 Harpster from 1974 until he retired in 1998. He was a soldiers soldier. Any time you needed help or ask a question he would take the time to help you. RIP Chief.

I first met Chief Harpster at the 318 Maintenance Company in State College, PA. He had a positive influence on my military career and I too became a Warrant Officer. I also saw him throughout the years at Scotia and the Legion in the Woods in State College. I saw him a couple times when I helped raise the flags at the cemetary for Memorial and Veteran's Day. It was there (a few years back) that I got to introduce my daughter to him. CW4 Harpster was an incredible man and we offer the Harpster family our prayers and codolances as you grieve his loss and celebrate a life well lived.
