Carol was a good friend of my uncle, Albert Tsugawa, who taught at Penn State. I came to know her when settling Albert's estate, when she provided comfort, counsel, and assistance to me and family. We stayed in touch afterward and I valued her kindness, directness, and sense of humor. She will be missed but will live on in our hearts and memories.

We are shocked and saddened to hear about Carol's sudden passing. This month, I was going to call Carol for that overdue dinner at the Gamble Mill. Carol loved her home, her neighborhood, friends, and the community. A dedicated volunteer, she was always trying to recruit us to be substitute crossing guards for the school district. She knew many of the crossing guards and the children walking to school on her streets. Carol was a strong advocate for the borough and taking part in public discussions on changes and policies. A well-known supporter of the State College Community Land Trust, Carol came out for open houses and annual meetings, and offered many suggestions on affordable housing. She loved travel, excellent food and witty conversations. We're proud to call Carol a good friend, and we will miss her every day. God bless her.

Half a century ago I had the privilege of sharing a dorm room with Caroli, that’s what we called her back then. I have thought long and hard about what to say. Our paths diverged over the years, but we kept in touch if sporadically. I could tell a million stories about her:she was fun, she could eat an entire eight pack of Long Johns, a pastry, at a sitting , She loved clothes, even took a class at PSU in which she would dress up and the class would critique her outfit. she did not like zoology, her major, she was a lot neater than I was, but put up with me. I could go on but I’ve always felt that the people that you meet in your life are like a patchwork quilt , each soul is a patch that when stitched together makes a quilt that nourishes you and keeps you warm. She is an extra beautiful patch in my quilt. God Speed love Gretchen

My husband, Bill Grulich, and I were introduced to Carol by Wen Xie, who wrote a biography of Carol's father. Wen let us know that Carol's grandfather was my grandfather's trading partner in the 1920's and put us together in a series of Zoom calls which culminated in a visit from Wen, his son, and Carol. It was fascinating talking with the two of them, learning more about about how people in China traded with the US, and fun for us to remember stories that my father had told us about Carol's grandfather visiting my grandfather in Cleveland and spending many hours meditating in his back yard.
I'm sorry we didn't have more time to talk and visit, but we are grateful to have had the opportunity to meet Carol and have the time we did have together.
