Obituary of Marie Kathryn Sefter
The Sacred Heart of Jesus welcomed Marie Kathryn Sefter home on July 18, 2023. Marie was born on August 4, 1931 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to William and Marie Kirk. She was the oldest of 6 children- William (Rebecca) Kirk, James Kirk, Katherine Anne Kraus, Edward Kirk and Monica Kuebler.
She attended Allentown Central Catholic High School, marrying her high school sweetheart, Jack Sefter, on June 6th, 1953. After Jack's graduation from Penn State, they moved to South Bend, Indiana. Andrew (Dianne), John (Holly), and Christopher (Kendra) were born there. On their return to Pennsylvania, Stephen (Mary Rose) completed their family.
Marie's greatest joy was her 4 sons and their families. Her sons' involvement in various sports, Boy Scouts, and college athletics led her from trips to HRB pool and ballparks in the summers to the Aloha Bowl in Hawaii. Marie loved her grandchildren and their spouses: Rebecca, Hannah (James Watkins), Willie, Jessica (Frankie Shumaker), Kelly (Curtis Kling), Clay (Kristina), and Louis Sefter. She was anticipating her 7th great-grandchild to join Eloise, Amelia, Zoey, Frankie, Henry and Goldelaine. She also had a special place in her heart for step-grandchildren Amber and Ben Cole.
Marie worked as a switch operator for Bell Telephone in Allentown, a pediatric assistant in State College, and a loan officer at PNC Bank, New Cumberland before her retirement. She enjoyed reading the Bible and other literature. She was passionate about, and lived, her Catholic faith, volunteering in OLV's Resurrection Choir. She was gifted in leaving others with a blessing and growing zinnias in her flower gardens.
Marie was pre-deceased by her husband, Jack (2021), her parents, her in-laws John and Catherine Sefter, and her brothers James and Edward.
The family will receive visitors at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Monday, July 24th from 10-11 a.m. Mass will follow at 11 a.m. with a private burial immediately after at Graysville Cemetery, Spruce Creek.
The Sefters especially thank the staff and friends at Harmony of State College for their special care and love during Marie's 2-year residence there.
