Obituary of Colonel William C Loop
Colonel William C "Bill" Loop, USMC (Retired), 85, entered into eternal peace late on Tuesday August 15, 2023 at Centre Care in Bellefonte, PA. Born July 25, 1938 in McKeesport, PA, he was the son of the late William Lawrence and Margaret Conners Loop. He married Glenda Catherine Gayvert on April 2, 1960. She preceded him in death. Anna McMullen, his second wife, also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his three sons, Eric Loop of State College, Jim Loop and his husband Michael Huff of Camp Hill, PA, Greg Loop and his wife Erica Solomon Loop of Pittsburgh PA, former daughter in law Beth Frank Loop of State College, and two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Loop and Ian Loop.
Bill graduated from McKeesport High School and the Pennsylvania State University. Later joining the staff at Penn State, he made many lifelong friends during his career as an administrator in the College of Liberal Arts. He also worked for more than 25 years as a part-time salesman at Jack Harper's Men's Store. This endeavor never produced any money, as all the earnings most certainly were rolled into an ever-expanding wardrobe of traditional tweeds, silks and gaberdine.
Bill's military service began with his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, attending boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in 1956. Following boot camp, he was offered the opportunity to attend Naval Flight Officer Training from which he withdrew. He finished his initial enlistment as a Navy sailor, briefly serving aboard the USS Murray. Following graduation from Penn State in 1962, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, ultimately retiring as a Colonel with over 30 years of service as a Reserve Officer.
He was a 50 year member of St Paul's United Methodist Church in State College. He enjoyed antiquing and traveling, and loved dogs, particularly German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. He was an enthusiastic collector of model trains and military memorabilia. Bill was a masterful creator of model railroad layouts, his work being featured twice in national magazines.
