I started at Penn State in 1966, the same year that John Lowe joined the faculty. I was his first start-to-finish grad student. I learned how to program in FORTRAN II in his quantum chemistry course and discovered an aptitude for software development that eventually led to a career in computer science. I chuckled when it was revealed that John liked spaghetti westerns. I must confess that I introduced him to the genre. I had two LARGE posters of Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef (as they appeared in "A Few Dollars More") in the group's grad student cluster area. In his 2022 Christmas card, he thanked me for introducing him to spaghetti westerns.

Dear Dr. Lowe,
You were (are) one of the best human beings I have known in this life. Your guidance as my advisor and continued support over the years truly changed my life. Thank you. I will never forget you. May you rest in peace.
Liza Rivera, Class of 1998, Penn State
My deepest condolences to Mrs. Lowe and the Lowe family.

I took John Lowe’s Organic Chemistry Class at PSU in the early 70’s. I have always remembered him as one of my most outstanding professors. I had little natural aptitude for the subject. My memory is that he gave me a copy of his lecture notes because my own lecture notes were lacking. I had flunked a previous attempt at taking the course. Thanks to his kindness and patience, I succeeded in his class.
