I knew Ryan as a wonderful, friendly and funny colleague while I was teaching in the Architecture Department at Penn State (2003–14). Although we did not stay in touch, I remember him fondly. Please accept my condolences for your loss.

Hard to say what I loved about Ryan. One thing was definitely his smile. You were never sure if he was just happy or he had done something mischievous. Loved when he was little and he would go down the street to Aggie's and the two of them would have a ball seeing how long he would play with her wooden leg. Times spent under the fireplug with his neighborhood buddies or in the back of his house at the many barbeques we held there. As nephews go, he would be pretty much at the top of the list since he lived so close and you could always find him in Grams. My Mom, his great Grandmom lived next door to him when he was little. One of the treats she was famous for were her chocolate chip cookies which Ryan loved. Being surrounded by loving neighbors and family evidently made an impact on Ryan as when he got older and married he moved pretty close to his Mom, Dad and Sister. What a beautiful family he and Samantha had. I used to tease him that Sam and him should be on the cover of Gentlemens Quarterly as they would have taken the modeling industry by storm. Instead, they took the world by storm. Samantha was just as much a shining star as Ryan and it was terrific chemistry for them both. My niece Mickey had a special bond with Ryan and it showed in any and all the pictures of have of them both. He made his parents proud not of all his successes but of the love of life he excuded. What an absolutely marvelous legacy he has left which will inspire his entire family. Love you Ryan, Aunt Phyllis

We miss you so much, Ryan. Being in your company always meant laughter, joy, positivity, and comfort. I have countless memories and every single one brings a smile to my face. Most of them make me laugh. I am forever grateful that you were in our lives, and that we had the honor of calling you a friend. You have left an inspiring legacy that will live on and impact so many. Samantha, Hudson, Grace, and Teddy - we love you with all our hearts.
P.S. I will find a Junonia shell for you, but am going to need your help!
Love,
Kristan and Billy

Ryan will be missed by those whose lives he touched as well as by those he would have encountered in years ahead. It is so sad to read about the death of someone who contributed so much to so many over far fewer years than we would have hoped.
I never met Ryan nor had I heard of him until I read his obituary, but I have to comment on him as someone who not only lived his life creating wonderful projects, but who also modeled his commitment to work, his students, his family, and friends. Those are the gifts that he gave to all whose lives he touched. It is the rare master teacher whom some of us have the opportunity to know who makes an indelible impression on us and influences the way we live our lives.
I send my prayers and condolences to his wife and children.

Ryan was so full of life. Even though we hadn’t talked in years, Ryan left such a strong mark on my heart with his glowing smile, caring ways, and ability to cut through the noise and deliver honesty with integrity and empathy. In my view, those are the best teachers - ones who care about growth and humanity equally. Ryan had this in spades. The world is a little dimmer with out him, and significantly brighter because of his impact on others.
Amidst this sadness, one story about him still makes me smile. Back in August 2005, Penn State had gone 4-7 the previous season, and I was meeting Ryan in the graphic design lab. We talked for a long while about his two loves - design (what were the students learning? How was his grad program? How many times did Lanny critique his work so far?) and football, specifically penn state. I said we’d go undefeated, and he politely told me to “get the heck out of here”. We made a small and friendly bet about it, and then didn’t talk much again until the end of the season. PSU went 10-1, we both loved the season, and he was so happy that even though technically he won the bet, he paid me anyways. He said to me “you were right! And I’m so glad you were”. We had a laugh, and then got back to talking about how design can impact the world.
I’ll miss you Ryan, but I’ll never forget you. Rest in peace my friend.

I never met Ryan and that is seemingly my loss. I did, however, learn about him which compelled me to purchase his children's book. I drive a school bus and read to my riders almost daily. I'm excited for my book to arrive so that I can share this amazing man's insight and inspiration with 'my' kids. Forever grateful for having learned of Ryan. Deepest sympathy for all he touched. Including myself!!!

Growing up, Ryan was always a beacon of light and love. With his quick wit and general acceptance of people, he made it so easy to become fast friends! He was the best to banter with. Although we hadn't connected in many years, I still considered him a friend and looked forward to his social media posts. It was fabulous to see him get married, have a beautiful family and be happy, as always...classic Ryan. Love, hugs and prayers pouring out to everyone who knew him.

Thinking with love of the whole Russel family. I will always remember how much he could make his sister laugh. Kim always said he was one of the funniest people she knew. The joy he brought to his family will live on forever.

I am so sorry for you loss. Although I did not personally know Ryan, I heard a lot about him from his Aunt Sheri. Such a bright light gone too soon. My heart goes out to the entire family. May you find the light in God's grace through this difficult time.
