Obituary of Elizabeth Crowe Atkinson

Marie Elizabeth "Betty" Atkinson died peacefully during the early morning hours of Friday, November 10, 2023 in State College, Pennsylvania. Betty was born in October of 1933 in Latrobe, PA to the late Walter and Marie Crowe. She was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara Marie Atkinson DeFrancesco and sister Margaret "Peggy" Crowe Heming. Betty is survived by sons, Scott David Atkinson of State College, PA and Steven Clark Atkinson of Ava Maria, FL; daughter, Beth Ann Atkinson McGonigle of Bolivia, NC; son-in-law Dr. Martin DeFrancesco of Charleston, SC; eleven grandchildren: Steven Atkinson Jr., Nicholas Atkinson, Benjamin Atkinson, Madeline Atkinson, Maria DeFrancesco, Dr. Anna DeFrancesco, Martin DeFrancesco, Jr., Olivia DeFrancesco, David Atkinson, Jonathan Atkinson, and Samantha Atkinson Liguori; and four great-grandchildren.

Betty grew up in and around Latrobe, PA and graduated from Greater Latrobe High School. She lived for many years in Lower Burrell, PA where she raised her four children and worked full time in an insurance and realty company. She attended Grace Presbyterian Church where she was active in the choir and many other activities. Once her children grew up, Betty moved to Burlington, NC where she attended Graham Presbyterian Church and worked for First Baptist Church.

Betty loved entertaining, whether it was bridge club, book club, church group, or a big family dinner. She was often referred to as the "hostess with the most-ess." She possessed a keen decorating eye and kept her home stylish and impeccable. No matter where she lived, she was blessed to be surrounded by good friends and family whom she loved. She will be missed by all.

A service is planned for Spring 2024, where she will be inurned alongside her daughter in Mount Carmel, PA.
