Arthur Goldschmidt posted a condolence

David Herrmann was a student in the first African History course that I taught, probably in the winter term of 1966-67. We encountered each other, by accident, in the YMCA, and he reminded me of how he knew me. He offered to lend me a book that had been in his family's possession for many years. It turned out to be the account of a minister somewhere in Western PA who had made a trip to the Holy Land, including Egypt, around 1880. I had the book for a long time but finally read it and found some of its observations interesting because my own research and teaching are about the Middle East in the 19th century. It took some time to find the book's owner, but Dave and I encountered each other in the Waffle Shop, so we agreed to meet there again so that I could return the book to him. He was a good conversationalist, and it was a pleasant surprise when he moved into Foxdale, where I live. We intended to meet for coffee, but never made a date, and obviously cannot now. I would be willing to come to the visiting hours but I have other commitments on that date. I will certainly miss him. Arthur Goldschmidt

I met David as my roommate at Penn State University in 1966. We were slightly older than other students; we formed Alpha-Herma-Rak Fraternity. We were the only two members. We always got along well. I have always known David as a friendly, generous and caring person.
