Obituary of Gerald Wion
Gerald (Jerry) Wion, 78, of Bellefonte passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Born September 18, 1945 in Bellefonte, he was the son of James and Katherine Lee Wion. On September 15, 1978 Stephen Shetler and Jerry began their journey together and married on June 29, 2017.
In addition to his spouse, he is survived by a brother, Leroy Wion and his wife, Shirley, near Jacksonville, Fl.
Prior to Jerry's birth, he was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Wion. Jerry is also survived by his mother-in-law, Rita Shetler, and his nieces, Cherilyn Wion White (Derek), Elaine Sanders (Michael) and his nephew, Tim (Sandy). He is also survived by one aunt, Sarah Neff (Jim), and many cousins and great nieces and nephews.
Jerry was a 1963 graduate of Bellefonte High School and a 1967 graduate of Lock Haven University (formerly Lock Haven State College) earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Jerry first taught Spanish and English at Ridgeway High School and later at Bellefonte High School. His last job, before retiring, was library assistant at Penn State University Libraries, Department of Adaptive Technology and Services, helping students with disabilities.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he participated in the contemporary choir, was a cook for many of the church functions, and served on the church council.
Jerry first studied in Spain during his junior year of college. He fell in love with the country and its people. He returned many times, first to study for his master's degree. He and Steve visited Spain six times together. He was also an avid fan of music, especially female vocalists. He met his idol, Connie Francis, several times and they remained lifelong friends.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College.
A second visitation will be held from 10 until 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2023 with a funeral service immediately following at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2221 N. Oak Lane, State College, with Pastor Ronald Miller officiating.
Burial will be in Meyer Cemetery, Bellefonte, PA.
