Obituary of Georgia Faye Fleming

Georgia Faye Fleming, 77, of State College, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at the Centre Care Rehabilitation Center in Bellefonte, PA.

Georgia was born June 1, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Elmer and Mary Spohn. She was married to H. Edwin Spath Jr for 30 years before parting ways. She then married Rex Fleming in 1997. Rex and Edwin survive.

She is survived by her three children Gregory Spath of Felton, PA, Tiffany Wimberley of Lacey, WA, and Sean Spath of Harrisburg, PA; Her sisters Carol, Dawn, and Diane; Her grandchildren Megan, Zeke, Cain, Isaac, Samara; and her great-grandchildren Jonathan and James. Georgia's brother, Frank Spohn is deceased.

Georgia graduated from Mexico Academy in Mexico, NY. After graduating she worked in data processing using punch card computers. She left this career to focus on being a home maker after Gregory was born in Syracuse, NY. Georgia and Edwin moved shortly after this to East Rochester, NY where Tiffany was born. When Edwin's job moved to Pennsylvania, the family relocated to Pine Glen, PA and established roots there. Sean was born shortly after.

Georgia continued being the lady of the house to raise Greg, Tiffany and Sean as the three children progressed through school and graduation. When it came time for Greg to attend college, Georgia once again entered the work force. She started as a regular employee, working her way into management in the food service industry in State College, PA. She worked in this career for 22 years before she was forced into retirement from an aggressive cancer. This is also where she met Rex Fleming, her future husband. She won her long fight against the disease, and led a happy and independent life with Rex for many years before her health declined and she needed further assistance.

Rex and Georgia enjoyed a relaxing and adventurous life together. The two enjoyed car shows and motorcycles. Georgia was always interested in learning new things, and Rex introduced her to the joy of riding on two wheels while they also enjoyed traveling, food, and music. When Greg was in town, he and Sean (who was still living with Georgia) would stay with Georgia and Rex to catch up on everybody's adventures. These weekends were filled with laughter, food and music at State College restaurants and bars, or at the arts festival in the summer. Georgia and Rex were animal lovers, and raised a sun conure, an african gray parrot, a cockatiel, and several dogs and cats. Their birds, of course, were trained to talk but enjoyed beeping like the answering machine even more.

While raising her 3 children, Georgia worked hard to provide a home for her family. She enjoyed cooking and canning fruits and vegetables that were grown in the family's own garden. For most of her children's lives the family survived on food from the garden and meat and dairy from a local farmer who she became friends with. Summer days were spent harvesting wild blueberries in coffee cans that would then be used in pies and jellies.

Georgia enjoyed camping and canoeing. She took karate lessons with her youngest son, Sean. She was also a volunteer fire fighter with the Pine Glen Fire Company. Georgia was an avid reader, and her favorite author was Stephen King. She also enjoyed card and board games, and the occasional video game with her children. She was a ruthless bingo player. As an animal lover, gerbils, birds, fish, ferrets, cats and dogs were always a part of Georgia's family. When she was young, Georgia also enjoyed skiing and scuba diving.

Georgia was an extrovert who loved to meet and talk to everyone that she met. She was a beloved and selfless friend and mother, always willing to sacrifice for other people's happiness. Even when not feeling so well herself, an off the cuff joke would bring laughter and a sparkle to her eyes. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, both near and far, whose lives she touched throughout the years.
