Sad to learn of John’s passing. I too had the privilege of working with John at HRB. His mentorship helped me throughout my career and I often thought of him as I tried to pass his wisdom along. Thank you John. Rest in peace.

Alas, "The Great One" is gone! How excruciatingly sad it is to learn that your cherished mentor and friend has passed. I had the honor of learning under "Dr. DeBarber" in 1964 while doing undergraduate studies at Penn State and later working with him at HRB in the 1970s. John was an incredibly competent engineer and had a masterful ability to present complicated analyses clearly and concisely. He earned the respect of his fellow employees and customers alike. I particularly recall a paper he presented at a technical intelligence conference that completely resolved a heated internal conflict between the various government agencies. John delivered one of the most compelling technical briefings I have ever witnessed. After his presentation there was no doubt that his assertions were correct.
After he retired from Penn State, we would occasionally dine out with our wives. After our get-togethers, Jane would invariable follow up with a hand-painted watercolor thank-you note ... each of which we have saved to this day.
Yes, John was my friend and mentor, and my life was enriched knowing him.

I am very sorry to hear of John's passing. He was very close to my Mom and we enjoyed John and Jane's visits to Altoona.
