Obituary of Edward Pierre Subler
Edward P. Subler, 96, of State College, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 19, 2024.
Edward "Ed" Subler was born in Shelby, Ohio on March 24, 1927 to Dr. Leo John and Dorotha Armstrong Subler. Following his mother's death while he was only an infant, Ed was raised by his father and maternal grandparents, G.W. and Theressa Armstrong, and a colorful group of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
After serving in the Navy in WWII, Ed graduated from Denison University in 1950. In 1956, Ed married Alice "Lisa" Carpenter in what became an enduring, 70-year love story.
Ed enjoyed a long career with Westinghouse Electric where he rose through the ranks in various marketing leadership positions. He retired as a Senior Vice President at Ketchum, MacLeod & Grove, an advertising agency in Pittsburgh, PA. A natural people-person, Ed had an uncanny ability to befriend and motivate people, earning him deep, genuine respect and lifelong friendships.
Ed's passion was fishing. Whether it was grand fly-in retreats in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, remote island trips on Lake Temagami, family vacations at off-the-beaten-path Ontario lakes and lodges, or Lake Erie daytrips on his boat, the "Lucky Pierre", friends and family could always count on Ed to create a trove of treasured memories.
Ed will be best remembered for his affable kindness, quiet fortitude, dry sense of humor, and loving support as a husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. He is survived by his son, Leo (Lynne) son Scott, daughter Dodie (Susan); grandchildren Will, Lucy and Ivy (Corey), and great granddaughter, June.
A small, private family gathering to celebrate Ed's life will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial donations in Ed's honor may be made to The Arbor Day Foundation, Trees in Memory @ shop.arborday.org
