Obituary of Thomas R. Brumbaugh

Thomas Roy Brumbaugh, 81, passed away peacefully at Celebration Villa of Nittany Valley on February 23,2024, to be reunited with his loving wife Shirley.

Son of Melvin and Mildred (Filer) Brumbaugh, he was born July 1, 1942 in Altoona, PA. He graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1960 and entered the Navy shortly after, serving proudly on the USS Norfolk as a machine repairman. Tom was employed by Penelec for 33 years, starting his career as a lineman, and working his way up to lineman supervisor and safety director until his retirement.

Tom is survived by his daughter Jacqueline Mayers, former son-in-law Andrew Mayers, grandson Nicholas and his wife Melissa, aunt Gladys Moyer and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded to heaven by his beloved wife Shirley of 61 years, his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, brother-in-law Raymond Whetstine and niece Brenda Martin.

Tom married his high school sweetheart, Shirley, on December 4, 1962 and became a father shortly after to his daughter Jackie. He worked hard to make sure they were taken care of and felt loved every day.

Shirley and Tom lived in Reedsville for 32 years in their log home alongside wonderful neighbors who became part of the family. For years they enjoyed breakfast with their numerous friends and the staff at Michele's Restaurant and looked forward to finding good bargains at the flea markets in Big Valley on Wednesdays.

Through the years Tom enjoyed fixing and owning classic cars, camping, hunting, fishing, and the occasional gambling trip to some local casinos with his father. He loved sports and was a huge Nittany Lions, Steelers and Penguins fan. Tom was also an amateur radio operator for many years, W3ANJ, and he and his ham buddies would participate in local contests. He kept several boxes full of postcards of all the people he contacted through the years.

Tom also loved dogs and cats. He always claimed he did not want Shirley to bring home another one, but they always ended up sleeping in their bed with them and getting the occasional snack from the table from him. Shirley was a huge animal lover and through the years he also got his fill of the many birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits she brought home. He would happily help her find the occasional "escape artist" who got loose in the house!

While we lost a beloved dad and grandfather, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. He has been unselfishly helpful and giving to many, a master at witty timing with his humor, and a "Mister Fix It" who could tackle any home improvement issue with ease. He was a quiet man at times, perhaps because his wife Shirley was the outgoing talkative one of pair, but his words of wisdom were always appreciated more than he knew. He set a wonderful example for all who knew him with his kind and giving nature.

Tom lost his brave battle with Parkinson's Disease. His family wishes to extend special thanks to the dedicated and caring staff at Celebration Villa of Nittany Valley and Grane Hospice Care.
