Obituary of Jean J. Cole
Jean J. Cole passed away peacefully at Juniper Village in State College on March 5, 2024 surrounded by family. She was born December 7, 1932 in Philadelphia, the daughter of William C. Johnston and Anna Weiser Johnston. Jean was a 1950 graduate of Frankford High School and 1954 graduate of Penn State. She is survived by 3 children: Herb Cole (Marion), Susan Bowers (Randy), and Patty Bittner (Mike); 6 grandchildren: David, Dan, Christine, Allison, Laura, and Katie; and one great-grandchild: Evelyn. She was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter Lisa.
A member of Faith United Church of Christ in State College for almost 70 years, Jean lived a life of Christian service to others. In addition to a myriad of roles she filled in the church, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Schlow Memorial Library, and Out of the Cold. When her children were grown, she joined the work force as an administrative assistant for the South Hills School of Business and Technology and worked there for many years. Jean was an avid Penn State sports fan since her undergraduate days, especially women's basketball and volleyball. A resident of State College since 1950 she had many lifelong friends, starting with Delta Zeta sorority sisters, many neighbors from early days living on Westerly Parkway, and co-workers at South Hills.
