Obituary of Harris Alan Freed

Harris Alan Freed, M.D., 67, of State College, died peacefully at home Saturday, April 6, 2024.

Born March 20, 1957, in Miami, Florida, he was the oldest son of the late Sanford Freed and the late Marilyn Indgin Freed. He is survived by his wife Amy Schlein Freed whom he married on July 4, 2011, and his beloved 'boys' – his dogs, Duncan and Hamish.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children from his first marriage, Erica, Jeremy, Cameron, Meredith, and Adrienne, and their significant others; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Dr. Mitchell Freed (Holly) of Orlando, FL and Glenn Freed (Chrislynn) of Glendale, CA. He was also predeceased by his brother, Warren Freed.

Harris had a passion for sports and more precisely for the Olympic Games all of his life. In 1976, he and his three brothers traveled to Montreal to attend the 1976 Olympic Games. His true passion for the Olympics would be reignited 20 years later in 1996, when Harris was chosen as a medical officer for the Olympic Games being held that year in Atlanta. As a Radiologist, sports medicine would become the focus of his practice.

In 1979, Harris graduated from the University of Massachusetts with an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. Four years later in 1983, Harris graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine (now Miller School of Medicine), after attending on a Board of Trustees Scholarship. Harris completed his Radiology Residency in Canton, Ohio and a Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Radiology at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He practiced Radiology at the Cleveland Clinic and later at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital, both in Cleveland, Ohio for 15 years. Later his career took him back to his native Florida before he accepted his final post in State College, Pennsylvania.
