As a young competitive fencer in 19 83. I had just graduated Penn State two years earlier when the men's coach was still Max Garrett. The next year Emik arrived. I never had the privilege to be coached by him but always received nothing but kindness and respect from him whenever I was privileged to see him. As a director on the fencing strip he was always fair and educational. Always graciously answering a question and explaining his decision. He taught me so much as a competitor. I have nothing but fond memories of every interaction with Emik. Sympathies for his passing but happiness and gratitude for having known him.
