I was an 18-year old kid from the Boston area when I came to Penn State. Dr. Cahir was my undergraduate advisor. What luck! A fellow New Englander! He shared my same interests of ice hockey and all things Boston. A few years later when I graduated, I was fortunate to have Dr. Cahir as my thesis advisor. Many values and ethics that have guided my professional life can be traced to hours in his office. I will miss his kindness and generosity. R.I.P. Dr. Cahir

MaryAnne and Family, We were saddened to learn of John's passing away. We would have liked to have attended the visitation/service, but frankly, I just found out about his death this evening (June 15) when I happened to pick up a copy of The Centre County Gazette. John was a kind and gentle soul who always had a warm and gracious word for everyone. It was always so nice to see him at university functions. I believe the last time that I saw you both was at a Spikes baseball game last summer. From reading his obituary, John appeared to have lived a full and adventurous life with many impressive achievements. I know, Maryanne, that you will miss him terribly after so many years together. Hopefully, as time goes on, you can find some small comfort in knowing that he is reunited with your son, Bill whose tragic death must have been so very heartbreaking for both of you. Again, Michael and I send our sincere thoughts and condolences. Love, The Colemans

I will long remember my many walks with John
From such different places as State College, Monterey (Ca), and Alexandria(Va)
His insights on Baseball/ Politics and Meteorology were insightful.
I am a better person for knowing him.

I taught John's late son, Bill Cahir, in my playwriting course and later was amazed when I set up the Undergraduate Fellowships Office and realized that John Cahir, the Vice President I reported to, was Bill's father. They seemed to be the perfect Penn State family. John owed his academic success to a whole career at the university. That would be impossible nowadays, but he always showed the traditional virtues of kindness and loyalty. He was more of a friend than a boss. and I send love and sympathy to his family

I'd like to extend my sincere condolences to the family. John was an outstanding mentor during my own experience as a student and faculty member in our college. His compassion, sense of humor, dedication and grace served as a wonderful model for all of us in EMS. Thanks John, for all you brought to the College, and to the University. You will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered.

John was a friend and a creative, trusted colleague. He was a visionary leader, dedicated to the task at hand and yet with a unique ability to facilitate cooperation and move an agenda forward. He had a major impact on students, colleagues, friends and community. He leaves an extraordinary legacy. Condolences to the family from Jim & Diane Ryan

When I was an undergraduate, I took a meteorology course with John Cahir. It was a mass lecture course that required a separate lab and when I could not schedule a lab to suit, I dropped the course. I know I missed something special when years later, as a member of the faculty, I got to know John. He was a great colleague but more important, he was a wonderful person. You wanted to be around him. I don't think I ever heard a disparaging word about anyone from him. My condolences to the family.

Upon my arrival at Penn State in 1993 as a young faculty member, John welcomed me right away and made me feel valued and at home. I won't forget his support, encouragement, and warmth. It's people like him that make Penn State a great place to work and State College a wonderful place to live.
