Obituary of Barbara A. Ghaner
Barbara Anne McGhee Ghaner, 87, of State College passed away peacefully at home on July 1, 2024. Barbara was born at Centre Community Hospital, Bellefonte, PA on August 14, 1936.
She was the daughter of Paul Raymond McGhee and Violet Pauline Neidigh McGhee. Barb was a 1953 graduate of the State College Area High School. On June 20, 1953 she married her high school sweetheart, Gilbert William Ghaner (who preceded her in death).
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Jo Ghaner Johnson (Eric) and a son, Gilbert William Ghaner, Jr (Lisa). Three grandchildren: Wesley Johnson (Katherine), Hannah Johnson Klaassen (Andre) and Nathan Johnson (Annalea). Her first great grandchild is due in September to Hannah and Andre. Siblings: brother John Raymond (Buzz) McGhee, and sisters Sandi McGhee Lucas, Debra McGhee Wildsmith. Barb had 3 siblings who preceded her in death, Eleanor McGhee Lohr, Martha McGhee DeArmitt, and Donald McGhee.
Barbara began work at PSU for the Dean of Admissions in 1953, then in the coal research area 1959-1964. In 1971, she started at Park Forest Elementary School working in cafeteria services and finally as a manager/supervisor before retiring in 2001. During that time, she also served on the PA Food Service Association's Executive Board 1992-1999.
Barb was a member of the State College Alliance Church where she served as a deaconess from 2006-2017. Throughout her life, Barb enjoyed camping, flowers, birds, (especially hummingbirds and cardinals) and collecting teacups. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Visitation will be at State College Alliance Church on Sunday, July 14 at 2 pm with the funeral following at 3 pm.
Burial will be at Pine Hall Cemetery.
