Obituary of Doris Ingram
Doris Mae Ingram, 87, of Woodward, passed away late Sunday night, January 16, 2011.
Doris was born March 16, 1923, and grew up in Portland, Oregon. She was the daughter of the late Percival and Amanda Etta Wolf Burns. Doris learned to deal with the rigors of both country life on her grandparents' farm and Depression times in the city of Portland.
She graduated from the Portland Girl's Polytechnic High School. In 1939, Doris was well known as one of the first women's shoe models in the city. On November 11, 1941 she married a Navy man, Jack Ingram. Jack preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1980.
During WWII, she toiled at home with a growing family while Jack served in the Pacific. Doris loved to go dancing with Jack, the love of her life, when he was stationed at home. She loved to go to church, camp, explore, and sing with her young family. She taught her children the importance of independence and the ethic that you can achieve anything you set out to do in life.
Along with Portland, Doris lived in San Francisco, Miami, Norfolk, Oakland, England, Washington D.C. and many other places for over 27 years as a Navy wife. After Jack's retirement, the Ingram family moved to State College, and then to Woodward.
Doris was a very active scouting mom and counseled her boys on merit badges. She became an Eagle Scout mother three times. She gave her daughters the hands-on experience of cooking and sewing early in their lives.
She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, State College, and of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion, Post #444 in Millheim.
With her fondness for the out-of-doors, Doris spent many of her last years at her property in Woodward, watching deer, turkey, bear, and hawks near the stream and mountain she loved most.
Doris is survived by five children, Karen M. Horvath and her husband, John of Ellicott City, Md., Beverly Klucher and her husband, William of State College, John R. Ingram of Allentown, Jim B. Ingram and his wife, Barbara, of Cape Cod, Mass., and Mary Etta Jeske and her husband, John, of Columbia, Md.; 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Along with her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, Peter Allen Ingram on October 29, 1974, and her brother, Robert Burns.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, with Monsignor David Lockard officiating. Committal will be in Graysville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College, PA 16801.
