That course, because of him, changed my life and helped a scared and confused early 20's girl get her focus.
I have thought about him many times and I do regret not seeing him again in person. I did call him about 10 years ago and try to thank him on the phone and thought I would visit him after that although it never happened.
In closing I just want to say thank you and be comforted that he impacted so many in a positive way.
Take care
Connie
One more thing.....an interesting coincidence happened that involved him. In the 90s I was sitting in Lady of victory church .... Was before mass started and I happened to be thinking of him and how grateful I was for that amazing experience more than 20 years prior. To my surprise I looked to my left because someone was just taking a seat right next to me. I was completely startled when I noticed it was Dr. Johnson! How divinely amazing,

This message is directed to family of Dr. Johnson. Just today I was thinking of him and did a search and found that it has been three years since he passed. I meant to visit him many times over the past 20+ years but life and kids and work always seem to get in the way. I'm sure he would've not remembered me as it was 1974 I believe when I took his class. I just wanted you to know that he was one of two or three of the best teachers I have ever known in my life (One of them being my own father)
He had the most brilliant and patient way having you sort out your thoughts and one of his assignments was the most impacting experiences I have had to clarify my purpose as an educator.

I am thinking of Henry a lot as the fall begins; I remember when I first began working with him as a doctoral student back in the autumn of 1992, as his TA, and what a great experience it was. I always think of his deep appreciation of nature and the wonders of the animal world at this time of year. I know that Henry is in a beautiful place, across the "Rainbow Bridge", but I miss him so much. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends from PSU.

Diana, I am thinking of you today as it is June 27th and a year now since Henry passed away. I was thinking of him today with great fondness and cried thinking about the times I spent with him and how deeply I will always miss him. I am so sorry I did not get to see him before he died. Unfortunately I was so preoccupied with my own problems, including my father's illness. He is 96 now and has dementia and is in the VA hospital down in Coatesville. I will be up in the State College area in October for the International Reading Association Conference at Penn State and want to stop and see you. Do take care and stay well. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My dearest Diana; How sad to come home from Scotland and find the sad news that Henry has died. I have such a longing to be able to sit with you and talk about him and you. I know you will have friends and family to be with you and help you through hard moments and though i am fa away, I am with you too. You made up a special couple for me, very respectful and admiring of each other's abilities, each able to provide alot of what the other wanted from a partner. It's sad and difficult to accept that our earthly time comes to an end, but yuhave many many experiences shared and enjoyed which will go on withyou. I send you a very warm embrace andhope tht you will in time move on from the painful feeling of loss to one of being pleased you shred part of your life together. I love you. Diana, I am so sorry to learn of Henry's passing. I have been out of touch for a while, as my father has dementia, and we have been living in West Chester, PA, since May, 2009, and I have been running my own business tutoring special-needs students. I will greatly miss Henry; he taught me courage, perseverance and was always on my side, no matter what. Henry was a mentor, and a friend. He helped me see my intelligence and encouraged me to think deeper, ask questions, and perceive things differently. I took that to heart and went on to get a PhD. I am still thinking deeper and not buying the party line, in large part because of him. He so loved ideas and language and jokes! I will miss his gentle soul.

It makes me so happy to see you staying strong because I know that this is what Henry would have wanted for you to do so that you to continue enriching the lives of your family and friends, as you did his so perfectly.
Never was a man so loved by a woman.
And now, I have this vision of Henry having a ball shown Him his trains, maybe even having a little reading group as he did at the SaSa's!

Dear Diana and Family,
Henry was a larger-than-life figure, and we shall sorely miss sparring affectionately with him during the meetings of our weekly philosophy seminar. His generosity extended to gifting us with several books over the years. Indeed, we're looking at two of them as we compose this message.
We should like to add that Henry had a beautiful voice. Whenever he spoke, Jim was reminded of Jason Robards, Jr., one of his favorite actors.
Farewell, Henry. You were a gentleman, a scholar, and a bodhisattva.

Dr. Johnson's passing has left a real void in the world that seeks truth and honor. Dr. Johnson was a superb teacher who required his students to reach higher and think deeper than they thought possible. His standards were the highest and he imbued his students with the desire to set the same standards for themselves. As one of his doctoral students I can attest to this. He was not just my mentor but a dear friend who encouraged me in my career. I will greatly miss him
