Obituary of Hobart Moyer

HOBART HARE MOYER, 85, a long-time resident of Lansdale, Pa., and, in retirement, State College, Pa., passed away peacefully on Friday, August 10 at home in Toftrees. Born on November 7, 1927 in Lansdale the son of the late Jesse Hare Moyer and George W. Moyer, "Hob" graduated from Lansdale High School in 1945. He attended Bucknell University between 1945 and 1948, and, choosing to enter his father's profession, entered the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, where he was inducted into the honorary dental society, Omicron Kappa Epsilon, and graduated in 1952. His undergraduate education was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army. Hobart returned to Lansdale in 1953 and opened his practice where he served the North Penn community for 36 years. On August, 18, 1951, Hobart married Betty Lou Horn, a resident of Chalfont and graduate of Doylestown High School. "Hob and Betts" had two children, Gregory B. Moyer of Mamaroneck, NY, and Douglas P. Moyer of Glenwood Springs, Colo. They enjoyed four grandchildren, David and Christopher Moyer sons of Greg and Suzanne and Kristin and Kyle Moyer sons of Doug and Jennifer. Apart from dentistry, Hob and Betty Lou led active lives and perpetuated his own parent's penchant for domestic travel. Life-long golfers and skiers, Hob treated his family to touring with the aim of enjoying America's natural beauty and taking in its recreational possibilities. An avid reader and student of history, Hob immersed himself in the battles of the Civil War and often planned itineraries accordingly. Hob also enjoyed music and played clarinet in a Dixieland jazz ensemble comprised of doctors all practicing at the Lansdale Clinic. Upon retiring and relocating to Betty Lou's alma mater, Penn State University, State College, in 1989, Hob worked part-time at the Toftrees Golf Course and actively volunteered in the community. Hob offered his professional expertise to the PSU Bio-Medical Committee of the Institutional Review Board and joined Betty Lou in supporting Penn State athletic programs through his participation in PSU Nittany Lion Club. Penn State football offered an opportunity to stay connected with many friends from the Lansdale area who followed the team. Their success over two decades triggered travel to many post-season bowl games as well as the occasional "away" contests at other Big Ten campuses. Immediately upon moving to State College, Hob enrolled in a number of liberal arts courses at PSU engaging subjects he had not studied as part of his preparation for a professional degree. He pursued a long-held interest in writing children's historical fiction and ultimately saw many of his stories published. Both Hob and Betts actively participated in the staging of the annual Central Pennsylvania Festival for the Arts and frequently attended concerts, plays, and talks held on campus throughout their time in State College.
