Obituary of Arlene Miller

Arlene S. Miller, 72, of State College, passed away May 6, 2013, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born Feb. 3, 1941, in Allegheny County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Lucas) Hasak. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald C. Miller, whom she married on May 14, 1960. Arlene graduated in 1959 from Homestead High School. When she and Ron decided to get married, she set aside plans to study nursing, since female students at the time had to live in dormitories. Eventually, she combined her interests in healthcare and animals to work as a veterinary technician. She and Ron were members of the Beaver County Kennel Club and raised German shorthaired pointers; later, they shared their home with Australian shepherds. She has been a Girl Scout leader, ran 5k and 10k races, and enjoyed many trips to Walt Disney World with her husband and family. Most recently, Arlene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, GreenLeaf Manor Retirees Group, and Mt. Nittany Dog Training Club. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Chisholm, of Malvern, Ohio; her brother, Dennis Hasak, of Steubenville, Ohio; and three children, Tracey Dooms, of State College, Cory and his wife, Roxane, of State College, and Alex, of Erie. Four grandchildren knew her as Oma: Allison Dooms and Lukas, Gretchen, and Kelly Miller, all of State College. All the dogs in the family will miss her animal crackers and more-than-generous portion sizes. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church in State College, with friends and family received there beginning at 1 p.m., and immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Group Mission Fund, 2221 N. Oak Lane, 16803, or to Centre County PAWS, 1401 Trout Road, 16801, both in State College. Arrangements by Koch Funeral Home, State College; online condolences at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
