Obituary of Philip Lovett
Philip Brooks Lovett , 97, of State College, died peacefully on September 28, 2013, at Anthony House, Foxdale Village in State College.
He was born August 14, 1916, in Danville, the second of three sons, to the late Frank and Bessie Brooks Lovett. He graduated at the top of his Danville High School class in 1934, and then began his long relationship with Penn State. After receiving his undergraduate and Master's degrees from PSU, he immediately accepted a position there as professor of mechanical engineering, and remained in the department for more than three decades.
Phil's life was one of service. In addition to his teaching career, he was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in State College, and earlier of Trinity Methodist Church in Danville. He began volunteering with community groups as a teen, and his passion for service matured into high-ranking positions at six of the seven Masonic organizations in which he participated. Phil was an avid photographer, extensive traveler, life-long birder and gardener, as well as a collector of stamps, clocks and antiques.
On September 8, 1948, he married Mary Frances Cannard, also of Danville, whom he had known all his life. They cherished each other for nearly sixty more years, living first in the home they built on W. Nittany Ave., and later at Foxdale Village. Phil and Mary remained devoted to one another until parted by her death on June 7, 2006.
Phil was an affable, kind and generous man who was appreciated and enjoyed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brothers, Richard and Clyde. He is survived by one sister-in-law, twenty-two nieces and nephews, and countless friends and admirers.
Services will be private. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Foxdale Village Community Fund, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16801, or Phil would be pleased to know you have simply volunteered some time to a worthy organization, in his honor.
