To The Family of Col. Gerry Russell:
I had the distinct honor and pleasure to spend time with your father, during his visit to Iwo Jima, walking the beach together, and alone, and being totally captivated, and fascinated with listening to his very vivid recollections of the time he spent there.
That experience, and those shared moments were so special, and his memory will always remain with me.
In successive years, I also had some time with him at the Iwo Jima Reunions....again, another wonderful experience.
I am so happy that I was able to know him, and to have had the opportunity to spend this time together.

A very fine man----------spent a morning with him discussing Jack Lummus, a MOH winner that Colonel Russell served with in WWII. Friendly, engaging, and very helpful, the research went smoothly and the Colonel approved of the submission. An irreplaceable asset and a man meant for the time he lived. Semper Fidelis

I was saddened to hear of Jerry's passing.
I especially remember all the years we served as Officials at the Millrose, and other Track Meets. Always had a smile on his face. And a wonderful guy to be around.
We shared so many great memories as fellow officials, and friends..
I know as a Marine, and track athlete he always rooted me on, and gave me so much encouragement.
He will be missed.
My deepest condolences to all his family.

It was for this kind of man that the phrase "the greatest generation" was aptly coined.
May your good memories always exceed this moment's sorrow.
