Obituary of Ferne Traynor
Ferne Traynor passed on peacefully, surrounded by her family, early on July 11 2014. Ferne Traynor (née Stone) was born in 1936 to Albert and Eunice Stone (née Katz). She was soon joined by a brother, Jack Stone. Her childhood was spent in Canton, OH with a large and loving extended family. Ferne studied at Penn State University and was a lifelong learner - especially of the technologies that helped her keep in touch with family. Her passion for education and young people led her to a long teaching and tutoring career. Ferne was married to John Traynor, and they enjoyed deep and enduring love despite John's death in 2003. They traveled together in the US and Europe and spent much time with their combined families: 14 children and more than 30 grandchildren. Prior to her marriage to John, Ferne was married to Walter Feldgoise. They lived in the US and Taiwan and have two daughters, Diane Lehman and Bonnie Harab, and five grandchildren: Jessica, Adam, and Hannah Lehman, and Julie and Matthew Harab. Early in her life, Ferne was very involved in the Jewish communities of Canton, OH and York, PA. Later, Ferne was a pillar of community at Cartmel in Kennett Square, PA, and The Village in State College, PA. She loved bridge, mahjongg, and water volleyball, served on many committees, participated in dramatic productions, and helped welcome and integrate new residents at both locations. She even taught an elderly friend to read. Most of all, Ferne loved her family, and she was a huge part of her children's and grandchildren's lives - provider of frank advice, genuine sympathy, many laughs, and world-famous mashed potatoes. The unconditional affection and commitment that Ferne shared not only with her blood relatives but also step-children and -grandchildren, in-laws, and countless others was proof that love makes family. Ferne was fierce and funny, smart and generous. She was a terrific storyteller, a wonderful listener, and a very faithful correspondent. She was well known for her timely and thoughtful actions and strong principles. Ferne's giant personality was sensed by all who met her, and her hugs were legendary. She will be greatly missed, but we will see her everywhere. A celebration of Ferne's life will be held at State College Friends School on Saturday, July 19 at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to State College Friends School's Ferne Traynor Fund to support children with learning differences. For more information please contact the school at (814) 237-8386. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
