Obituary of Mason Whitmore

Mason Whitmore, MD, 96, of State College, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born September 11, 1917 in Houston, TX, he was the son of Frank Clifford Whitmore and Marion Mason Whitmore who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Marion M. Whitmore, Jr., of State College. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Clifford Whitmore, Jr., and Harry Edison Whitmore. Mason was a graduate of State College High School in 1936. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy for a year prior to attending Yale University, where he majored in English Literature and graduated in 1941. He did post-graduate work at Franklin and Marshall College in theatre and drama. He then attended medical school at Cornell University. He completed his internship at Lankenau Hospital, Philadelphia prior to completing his residency as a radiologist at Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia. He was a radiologist at Lankenau and later opened his own practice. In 1972, Mason moved to State College where he was a radiologist of Sylvan Radiology at Altoona Hospital and from each he retired at the age of 80. He was a member of many professional organizations related to the medical field. He was also a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild of New York City, NY. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one's local SPCA or animal shelter. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.
