Obituary of Peter Maserick

Peter Harrington Maserick, PhD., loving husband of Ruth Maserick past away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2014 of complications from pneumonia at Pinnacle Health Hospital in Mechanicsburg. Peter was the son of Albert and Frances Harrington, born in Washington, DC on February 8, 1933. He lived in Silver Spring, MD and graduated from Montgomery Blair High school and also earned a 1rst Lt. rank in the Air Force. He attended the University of MD where he earned his Doctorate in Mathematics in 1960. Peter published research in harmonic analysis, a branch of pure mathematics, over a period of more than 30 years, from 1959 to 1992. He collaborated extensively with mathematicians from Denmark, France, Poland and the US, and his research continues to be cited by mathematicians from around the world. He was also a loved and admired Professor at Penn State, and received the Theresa Cohen award for teaching. Peter was known in the Math department for organizing the popular annual Math picnic for math faculty families. He had a previous marriage to Marianne Schrader with whom he had four kids. The most treasured moments of his life were those spent with is family; traveling, camping, playing games and playing his harmonica. He is remembered for sharing his joy of life through his ability to make us laugh, his resounding singing voice, and his leadership to bring people together to have fun. He was an avid Penn State Football fan and loved roller blading, jogging, biking, billiards, and horseshoes. He is survived by, his wife Ruth, his sister Carolyn Hammett in Southern Maryland, and children Allison Maserick of Exeter PA, Jennifer and spouse Dave Eccleston of Herndon VA, Margo Shogren of Annandale VA, Paul and spouse Betty Maserick of Harrisburg PA, as well as 9 grandchildren Christopher, Joshua, and Rachel Shogren; Peter, Tommy, and Sarah Eccleston; and John, Brian, and Jessica Maserick.
