Obituary of James Kelz

James "Bud" Warren Kelz passed peacefully at the home of his son Jim and wife Kathy surrounded by his loving family 18 September 2014. He was born 17 October 1930 in Honesdale, PA, the son of Ruth Alta Warren and Julius Otto Kelz. He is survived by his former wife Margery Johns Kelz, his sons James Russell Kelz and wife Kathy Kelz, of Pleasant Gap, William John Kelz and wife Ursula Kelz, of Pleasant Gap, and Russell Charles Kelz currently of Leesburg, VA. He is also survived by Jim and Kathy's sons Chris, wife Sarah, Travis and wife Kim; Bill and Ursula's sons Zack and wife Liz, Landon and Griffin; and Russ's sons Jack and Liam; as well as Great Grandsons Holden, Cole and Zachary. Bud is also survived by two fine brothers, John Leroy Kelz and wife Mary Kelz of St. Augustine, FL and Julius Robert Kelz and wife Delcye Kelz of Hurleyville, NY. Bud graduated from Honesdale High School in 1948 where he was class President all four years and was class Salutatorian. Bud was team captain of the Honesdale High School baseball team and basketball team. Bud matriculated to Susquehanna University where he played basketball in his first year. Bud then transferred to the Pennsylvania State University where he was a member of the baseball team. James is Professor emeritus of Counselor Education and Rehabilitation. He held a B.S in Biology in Secondary Education, M.Ed. in Counseling Education and Ph.D. in Counseling Education all from The Pennsylvania State University. He was also a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University's Medical School Laboratory of Community Psychiatry. James retired from Penn State after 30 years of service as Director of Rehabilitation Programs. He was a licensed Psychologist in the State of Pennsylvania. James was a member of the American Psychological Association; the Pennsylvania Psychological Association; National Rehabilitation Association; American Association for Counseling and Development; Employee Assistance Society of North America; National Vocational Guidance Association; Pennsylvania Rehabilitation Association; and Penn State Phi Delta Kappa, the latter three of which he served as President. He was the author or co-author of over 70 articles and many state and national professional policy statements. Bud served his country as 1st Lt. United States Air Force, Korea 1955-56 and developed a strong bond with the people of South Korea. Bud enjoyed teaching English as a second language to many of his students. Bud was very proud of his extensive photo collection which documented his many overseas travels. Bud had a passion for teaching his sons about hunting, fishing, and playing baseball. Bud particularly enjoyed coaching little league baseball. Bud always enjoyed being around his sons friends and developed a special relationship with many of those friends who also referred to him as "Pops". Pop's family would like to thank Centre Crossings Hospice for the wonderful care he received during his last few days. The Memorial Service will be held at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton St, State College, with Celebrant Jackie Hook officiating, on 22 September 2014 at 5 PM EDT. A celebration of life will follow at Damon's Grill 1031 E. College Ave, State College, PA 16801 immediately following the Memorial Service. Pop's journey on this Earth is over.
