So sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Wise. He was my 7th grade homeroom teacher, and Mrs. Wise was my Social Studies teacher the same year. Great people!

My deepest sympathy to Helen and the children. I have always had fond memories of Howard as a fellow teacher at State College. I always appreciated his defense of Pennsylvania History as a required course when there was a move to do away with it.

in anyone's life, they are fortunate if they have a handful of teachers who impact their life. Mr. Wise was one of those teachers -he made me enjoy history and realize how it impacts each and every persons life. Just the other day, I was sharing what I took away from his class with my daughter because she doesn't understand why she needs to learn history in school. When we were done talking about Mr. Wise, she had a very different attitude about history and now wants to learn about. I also remember how he took pity on me because of my brother "Mike". But most of all I remember the family picnics and sledding parties at the farm! Mr. Wise was not only my teacher but also a family friend! And no matter where I saw him, he always challenged me to learn new things. He taught me that although cows were farm animals that should be treated as you would your pets. He taught me how to fish in the pond. He taught me so many things in life and although it has been quite awhile since I last saw him, I have never forgotten him and never will. I am sorry to hear of his passing. He was such an amazing man. Be thankful for all the years that you had with him!

Ah,The Wise duo! I often tell of the interwoven, 60 year history with my family and yours. From my sister's brownie scouting, to our church, to your speaking engagements (one at my very first opening day in Lansdale, to your handing me my PH.D in Rec Hall,to our work with that 10th grade beauty, to you in the Gov's office and me at Capital Area IU.
Helen, I offer the same feelings about your loss as anyone else. But I wish to say also that my respect for Howard goes a bit beyond "a good guy, well met." My lasting memory of Howard Wise will be this: He always treated me with candor, dignity, and acceptance. As you,he knew me as a punk kid, a valley person, and a school administrator. His interaction with me across all those roles was seamless. I liked him.
My wife (Ne Doris Dutrow)and I truly hope you gain some strength from how others feel about Howard's contributions.
