Obituary of Dorothy Kauhl
Dorothy Softley Kauhl, age 90, died at her home in Pleasant Gap on Dec. 18. Born in Grafton, Nebraska she began a 36 year teaching career in Fillmore County, NE schools. After graduating from the University of Nebraska, she taught in American Service Schools in Germany where she met Syracuse, NY native Herbert P. Kauhl. They married in 1953.
Dorothy taught in Alcoa, TN; Princeton, NJ; and Waynesboro, PA followed by 17 years in State College, teaching 3rd and 4th graders at Pine Grove Mills Elementary School. She earned a Masters degree from Shippensburg State College, as well as Reading Specialist certification, and retired in 1987.
In retirement the Kauhls travelled extensively with Elderhostels, wintered in Carefree, AZ, and maintained a remarkable garden around their Ferguson Township home. Earlier this year they moved to Pleasant Gap.
A member of the State College Presbyterian Church, Dorothy served as Clerk of Session and most recently led a Presbyterian Women bible study. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, her two daughters, Nancy and husband David LeRoy of Shermans Dale, PA and Kathy and husband Mark Johansen of Verona, NJ, a granddaughter Kara Johansen, her sister Muriel and husband Rolan Anderson of Minneapolis, MN, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Ralph of Fairmont, NE.
A memorial service will be held at the State College Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3:00 p.m
