Obituary of Dale Baker
Dale E. Baker of State College died on Friday, April 15, 2011 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. He is survived by his wife, Doris L. Baker, and three children: daughter Carol S. Baker and of Morrisdale, PA (Dennis Marince), son Kenneth L. Baker of Ingleside, TX, (Monica Baker), and daughter Donna K. Kephart of Hummelstown, P A (Tim Kephart). He is also survived by six grandchildren: Alicia Ellis of Oakland, CA, James M. Ellis (fiancee Rachel Sowash) of State College, P A; James, Colleen and Joshua Baker of Ingleside, TX; and Matthew Kephart of Hummelstown, P A. Dale was born in Marble Hill, Missouri on a livestock farm. He is survived by his brother, James W. Baker of Jackson, MO and several other family members. Dr. Baker received his academic degrees from the University of Missouri and was an Emeritus Professor of Soil Chemistry at Penn State University and President of Land Management Decisions. He developed the Baker Soil Test and other methods of monitoring wastes and soils for trace elements and heavy metals used in environmental pollution controls. His methods, used nationally and internationally, brought him numerous awards, honors and publications. In addition to his many academic accolades, Dr. Baker remained a farmer at heart and a steward of the land. He was regarded by his family and peers as both wise and trustworthy, and made a point to conduct his business and personal relationships with the highest integrity. Dale was a long-time member of the University Baptist and Brethren Church in State College. Friends will be received at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College, on Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 12:30 until 2:30 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 18, 2011 at the funeral home at 11:30 pm with Rev Marv Friesen officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hall Cemetery following the service. Friend are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dale's memory to the University Baptist and Brethren Church in State College or the State College SPCA.
