Obituary of Ling Hu M.D.
Ling Gut Wong Hu, M.D., of State College changed energy states on January 13, 2015, at the age of 96. Born in 1918 to immigrant restaurant owners Wong Coke Yie and Lee Ngaan Mon, she was the second Chinese baby born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She earned an A.B. from the University of Cincinnati and went on to graduate from their medical school in 1942.
Dr. Wong had a family practice in Cincinnati from 1944 until 1953, when she married Ling-Wen Hu and moved to State College. She administered anesthesia at Centre Community Hospital (1954-1957), left practice to focus on raising her children, then returned to work as a school physician for several area school districts (1969-1984). In1973, recognizing that Medicaid recipients had trouble getting medical care in the area, Dr. Wong started a joint pediatric practice in State College, from which she retired in 1986. She belonged to the AMA, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Centre County Medical Society (Secretary-Treasurer (1971-1975)), and was a Board Member of the Central Pennsylvania Professional Standards Review Organization from 1979-1986.
She volunteered with local chapters of the League of Women Voters (1954-1989, being at various times Voters' Guide Chair, Treasurer, and President (1987-1989)), the American Red Cross (Board Director, 1972-1976), and the American Cancer Society (Board Director, 1970-1973). She was active in the Advisory Council on Aging (1987-1993), the MH/MR Advisory Board (1989-1995), the Apprise Program of the Office of Aging (1987--2007), the VITA program of the IRS (1987-2004), and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
God and prayer were central to Ling's life. Raised as a Baptist, she converted to Roman Catholicism after being impressed by the kind treatment she received at Catholic school in Cincinnati. She remained a devout Catholic until her passing. Ling was a 60-year member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church where she taught CCD, sang in the Sanctuary Choir for 25 years, and attended daily mass for decades.
She had a great love for music, and was an accomplished pianist who was associated with the Cincinnati Symphony. She would often sing to herself as she went about her daily activities.
She was a loving mother and wife, and was known to her family and friends for her culinary skills. To this day her children have not tasted any other eggrolls as good as hers. She had a biological internal GPS system long before external GPS existed. She kept meticulous records on paper long before the advent of Excel.
Mrs. Hu was widowed in 2007. Her two children remain, Shih-In Ma of State College and Amritapuri, India, an engineer-turned-spiritual-explorer-healer, and Da-Shih Hu of Hanover, NH, a psychiatrist at Dartmouth College with many interests.
Dr. Wong's funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 820 Westerly Parkway in State College. Interment will follow at Centre County Memorial Park.
