Obituary of E. Kelley
Edward James (Jim) Kelley, 83, died at Mount Nittany Medical Center on December 2, 2010. He was born on August 29, 1927 in Jeannette, beloved only son of the late James F. Kelley and Mary Ellen Jewett Kelley. On July 3, 1954 he married Patricia Ann Misner who survives him at home. Doctor Kelley received his undergraduate degree at Clarion State University where he played basketball and baseball. Upon graduation he signed a professional contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He earned his master's degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and received his doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University. He taught Health and Physical Education at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, where he also coached basketball and baseball. Subsequently, he became Administrator for Continuing Education for The Pennsylvania State University branch campus at New Kensington. He then was appointed Director of Continuing Education for the College of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and Assistant Professor of Physical Education at the Penn State University. Later he was named Assistant Dean for the Commonwealth Educational System in the College of Health and Human Development. Dr. Kelley was the author of numerous articles dealing with knowledge obsolescence in physical education. He was the recipient of an award from the National University Extension Association for his doctoral thesis on the same topic. The award was in recognition of his creativity in designing new programs using multiple matrix sampling. In 1989 he retired from The Pennsylvania State University to do private consulting. He was a member of the American Legion having reached the rank of First Lieutenant in the 28th Division, U.S. Army, the Elks, Centre Hills Country Club, and the State College Presbyterian Church, In addition to his wife, he is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Mary Kelley, and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Nancy (Edward) Matko of Harrison City and Mrs. JoAnne Mooney of Chicago, and numerous cousins. Friends will be received in State College at the Koch Funeral Home between the hours of 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. An additional viewing will be held at the James Lindsay Funeral Home in Harrison City, Pa., on Monday, Dec. 6 between the hours of 2 to 4 p.m. followed by services held there with the Rev. Meredith Ann Hutchison officiating.
Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Penn Township in Westmoreland County. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W, Beaver Avenue, State College, PA 16801.
