One day in the mid-1970’s, I wandered into the PSU Center for the Study of Higher Education hoping to speak with someone about becoming a doctoral student in the Center’s higher education program. I saw Dr. Toombs sitting in his office and asked him for information about the program. Over an hour later, I left his office on top of the world with excitement. A very kind and patient person had described a program that seemed tailor made for me.
I graduated from PSU with a D.Ed. degree in higher education in 1984. I will be forever grateful for the generous support Dr. Toombs provided throughout my doctoral studies. He was a very nice person and an excellent professional role model.

Bill Toombs was the quintessential gentleman-scholar and a wonderful faculty role model for me and many others. I was blessed to have taken the last formal course offered by Dr. Toombs, HI ED 548 Curricula in Higher Education, in the late 1980s (along with Jim Trainer, Dave Guthrie, Mike Dooris and many others). No matter what our research or career interests, Bill had some useful data, article or advice to offer, always delivered with wonderful words of encouragement. I think he probably knew that despite his many career accomplishments and research contributions, he would be most remembered by how he helped and guided others, particularly his students. For those who were blessed to cross his path, we will never forget the impact he had on our lives.

I am sorry to read in the paper today that Dr. Toombs died. He was on my dissertation committee in higher education and I would often say hello to him when I was a guest at dinner at Foxdale.
We had a special connection. My father Ralph Ricker was Dean of Men and a faculty member in history at West Chester and had taught your father in class when he was there as an undergraduate.
How sad I am today that they are both gone.
I send you my deepest sympathy.
